Stunning

If anyone were to try and describe this book as a bore, I couldn't conceive any reason why. This book held me completely spellbound. The book starts off with Joe experiencing these unusual chain of events on the one year anniversary of his wife and childrens plane crash. As the days progresses he comes into contact with families who had also lost their loved ones on this devestating flight, but as soon as he does come into contact with them, they begin to parish themselves due to unexplainable suicide and deaths. So what secrets does this "Sole Survivor" have? And will Joe feel these answers justify his loss? I know this book kept me captivated right down to the last page, and Joe's last decision.

Not TSA approved

I recently picked up this book for four reasons:

1. It was on sale

2. I'd just finished reading "The Husband"

3. I needed light entertainment for a long flight

4. I was in a hurry and it was conveniently stacked near to the register

It was only during the boarding process that I glanced at the back cover, and discovered my faux pas, which did not escape the notice of a literate cabin attendant who gave me "the look".

Okay, maybe a novel about a plane crash is not ideal for a five hour flight, but I'm not superstitious that way (knock wood). Unfortunately, this is a typical Dean Koontz book - it starts off smoothly, gains momentum, takes off and gets moving at high speed, and just when you're enjoying the flight, it suddenly goes crazily off course, crashes and burns.

A crime reporter loses his wife and two daughters in a bizarre plane crash that kills everybody on board. A year later he's still in depression, but then he meets a woman who apparently survived the crash. He starts tracking her down, and relatives of the other victims suddenly start committing suicide under very strange circumstances. When he eventually finds her, things get even weirder, and we're back to secret labs, mad scientists and illegal experiments, mixed with cults, conspiracies and magic pictures.

Enjoy the ride while it lasts, but beware of the sudden stop.

Sensory chocolate...If I were blind, I'd want Koontz to be my eyes

I relished this book the way one would relish a good chocolate bar...reading and letting it soak into my soul. This is one of the few books I've read that actually draws you into the scenery. You don't know if it's the reality of the characters or Koontz's talented, yet subtle description of places and situations. When he's sitting on the beach, you can feel almost hear the waves and smell the sea salt. When he's on the run from dangerous people, you almost feel like you're there in the passenger seat beside him.

I finished this book, put it down and just said, "Wow..."

Is there life after death? That's the question this book tackles...and while the journey to this answer is spell-binding, I think we, the readers, wanted more elaboration into this question. If only Koontz knew all the answers!

I'm surprised at the negative reviews, but I can see why some wouldn't like this. Unfortunately, many Koontz readers aren't true lovers of his literary genius. Koontz books are usually prominently displayed in the grocery store's best-seller section...a convenient buy for readers not looking for a read from someone with enormous talent, but rather something that will entertain with a good plot but no supporting filler or depth.

If you're not a serious reader, but a poolside one, this might not be the book for you. The glory of Koontz's writing is in the details and the ending isn't written for the poolside crowd that want to see the impossible happen. There's no swell of trumpets and bringing back of the dead. The ending is tremendously satisfying, but I wish it was elaborated on with as much detail as the rest of the story.

To really "get" Koontz's writing, you have to have an open mind and leave aside skeptical opinions, as much of what he writes seems to be horror, sci-fi, supernatural, or suspense. You have to fully allow yourself to leave your own world or you will never be able to enjoy the tale as presented.

Nobody can deny that Koontz is a spectacular writer. I haven't read every single one of Koontz's novels and I'm glad I haven't. I think it dims your appreciation for a good novel when you read it because you spend all your time comparing it to every other work ever written by Koontz. When it comes to a good author, this can be like comparing your own children. If you have never read Koontz, definitely buy this book. If you have, try to clear your mind of who the author is and "open your heart" to this wonderful story.

Agreed - Not a good undergrad textbook

Unfortunately, I have to rate this book one star. It is clear the authors are brilliant experts on signals and systems. Communicating their knowledge to the rest of us is not their strong suit. Some issues I have had with this book:

First, the sample problems done in the book are barely explained. I have one BS and have worked in engineering for over ten years. I understand how to work through problems. However, the sample problems in this book are almost incomprehensible.

The second problem is a product of the first - the amount of errors in this book. If the authors had actually worked through every problem, within the book, they would have caught the errors. I was able to acquire a copy of the solutions manual and working with my professor have caught several errors already in the first chapter. Errors are not only frustrating, they undermine confidence in the book - how can I be sure that spending an hour working one problem to the "right" answer is worth it when the answer provided has relatively good chance of being wrong?

The third problem is new theories are introduced in solutions. For example, the books does a poor job of explaining the categories of systems - linear, time invariant, etc. When end-of-chapter problems on system classification are attempted, the solutions manual provides answers that incorporate theories never raised in the text. Problem 1.76 is typical. Only 1 "H" is shown, but the answer defines H1 and H2 and H3. The effects H3 explain "[t]he constant level appearing at the back end of the output, from t = 2 to t = 3, may be explained by the presence of a strong device connected in parallel with the integrator. On this basis, H3 is time-invariant." There is no discussion in the chapter of "strong devices connected in parallel" on how the those devices affect the appearance of signal output.

I want to note that I am currently halfway through chapter 2. Maybe it gets better. I will update this post if it does. If it doesn't, I am in for a very long semester!

I have been told by the publisher a new version is coming out in 2012. Too late for me.

NOT An Introductory Class Textbook

I was very excited about taking the class Introduction To Signal Processing and even started reading the first chapter in this book before the class began. Unfortunately my goal of actually reading this book throughout the semester died exponentially fast as I realized the text was completely useless for the average student who didn't have 10 extra hours a week to carefully interpret what the author was trying to explain. I'm an ECE student, our program works us very hard, and no one has anything good to say about this book other than it attempts to cover the necessary material. Textbooks on introductory material should explain material in a way that makes it EASIER for students to understand, not more confusing. I refuse to believe that this is the best book for teaching Signal Processing and I am pleading with professors - do not make your students use this book!!!!!! Students - you would be better of using Google, read the reviews for the other version of this book by the same author.

A tough book for a maddeningly tough subject.

Signals and Systems is just plain hard. Especially convolution. This book isn't much help, unfortunately!

Quality of examples varies considerably. Some are quite illuminating; others so opaque as to be useless. You'll find yourself turning to a solution manual more often than not (if you can locate one). As noted in other reviews, there is a tendency for the homework problems to introduce new concepts without really explaining them. Not helpful.

What this book really needs is an introductory-level companion to itself. That would be what universities should actually use for an undergraduate-level Signals and Systems course.

I never did bother with the "interactive solutions" part (aka "JustAsk"). I absolutely detest one-time-use "passwords" and other such blatant attempts to kill the used book market. If I hadn't been forced to buy this book because it was assigned for the class, I wouldn't have.

This gets as many as two stars because, sadly, there isn't anything a whole lot better in its genre, as far as I know, and there is *some* amount of helpful explanation (albeit seemingly at random).

Michael R. Solomon is professor of marketing and director of the Center for Consumer Research in the Haub School of Business at Saint Joseph’s University in Philadelphia. He also is professor of consumer behaviour at the Manchester School of Business, The University of Manchester, U.K. Michael’s primary research and consulting interests include consumer behavior, branding, and marketing applications of virtual worlds. BUYER BEWARE! Not W8-10 OS Compatible.

This has been possibly the most ANNOYING book ever. It doesn't work on OS Windows 8 or above. So if you have a newer laptop (or your laptop has been forced into upgrading YAY MICROSOFT) don't bother getting this if you don't have a kindle, or if it bothers you having to read it on your phone. Amazon needs to fix this.

A Terrific Debut Novel by a Novelist of Great Promise. Call Me Leila should become a Hallmark Channel Hit!

In her debut 249 page novel, Ms Hanna has managed to pack in not one, but two life stories of poor Christian women growing up on what we, in America, would call 'the wrong side of the tracks.'

Having spent some 11 years of my life living in Egypt, even working a fair amount in Mansoura, I was impressed at how well Hanna was able to encapsulate life in this city famous for the reasons cited. She does this by showing, instead of telling. This method of setting the stage is especially difficult for most new writers, but Hanna accomplishes the task beautifully for Meshmesha and for Galeila.

I normally do not read novels of this type, but, at her request to review, I did take advantage of the opportunity to download a free novel about life in Egypt spanning the period from Nasser's revolution of 1952 through the Arab Spring and concluding shortly after the first democratically-elected president was ousted in 2013. I especially love how her character, a devastatingly poor Christian, so succinctly had dismissed any concerns regarding Morsi's ouster despite her previous elation at the removal of the Mubarak concern. What I mean is, she didn't spend a great number of pages on this. Less than one. Other writers might have utilized a doesn't or so pages.

Although she DID develop both characters, in just 249 pages, I believe these two women were interesting enough to warrant two books. Book one could have provided a prelude to Meshmesha, with a solid background of Egypt from the time of the Great Depression through the birth of Galeila. Meshmesha and her siblings remind me of Laura and the Little House books or the Walton's but, of course, from a far more poverty-stricken point of view and from a different angle, but the story could sell if well told. Of course, think is still possible and I would buy such a story.

The second book could cover Galeila's life, but would develop more of the characters whom she married and/or loved. And it should include bits of the terrorism that took place in 1997, the earthquake in 1992, and, especially, on the various feuds in Upper Egypt that most Americans would suspect she was exaggerating about.

What I'm saying is, Call Me Leila is a terrific story that could be two great stories if she chooses to.

I definitely recommend this novel. I honestly believe it gives an insight into a demographic within Egyptian society that needs to be heard by people outside Egypt. Too many Americans think all Egyptians are Muslim and too few appreciate the fact that the vast majority of Egyptians are not terrorists. Hanna has found a way to show us both facets of a complex, cosmopolitan, society. Not so diverse as the USA, but nearly so.

I look forward to more novels from this author. She could become a serious Hallmark Channel contributor in the future. It all depends on whether she will continue working to become the very best writer she can be.

"Killers of the Dream..."

N.G. Hanna has successfully woven a number of important themes into her first novel. The novel spans a good half century, with one of the climatic moments being the events of Tahrir Square which brought down the three decade rule of Hosni Mubarak. The euphoria of this triumph briefly flitted across the Western media; the reaction, and the restoration of "Plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose" was not as photogenic, and hence "flew under the radar" of international news coverage. I recently finished reading Marcel Proust's The Guermantes Way, set in a time period more than a century after the French Revolution. Proust depicts a social structure that had largely replicated the hierarchical privilege and economic injustice that was pre-revolutionary. Proust has a character say that Waterloo was necessary in order to have the Restoration (of the monarchy.)

Hanna has her protagonist, Galeila, later to drop her first syllable, and simple be known as Leila, as in the title, play a demonstrative role in illustrating how the 1% restore their "privileges." In Egypt, they fanned sectarian differences, between Muslims and Coptic Christians, and between fundamentalists and secularists. Galeila is caught up in the middle, a "pawn in their game." I thought of Lillian Smith's classic work, written in 1949, Killers of the Dream about how the 1% in the American South would use race to divide poor whites and poor blacks, and thereby having each focus on the other, rather than examine the economic structure that held them in poverty.

It is also a novel involving family relations and the longings of the heart. And in particular, it is on the difficulties women face in Egyptian society. Yes, many an unhappiness, each in their own way. Meshmesha means apricot; "country people" would often give their children the names of fruits. Galeila's mother was so named, born in the countryside in 1950. At the age of 9, she becomes a "maid," (effectively, involuntary servitude) to a journalist's family in Cairo (Hanna notes the irony that he was a liberal journalist writing on the conditions of the poor... and somehow those folks never seem to look inside their own households). Meshmesha grows up within this household, and eventually marries, and Hanna deftly handles the circumstances surrounding the conception and birth of her only daughter, Galeila. The latter's search for her father is also a dominate theme in the book. Ah, father-daughter relationships.

In the background is Egyptian history, particularly the (little recalled, nowadays, in the West) war in the Yemen, in support of Republican forces. Hanna uses one of her characters to sarcastically deride concepts such as "Pan-Arabism." The Six Day War with Israel also plays a part, with more modern concepts of PTSD. Even more modern, and more impressive, was the soldier involved just faking it?

Countries export various products. In Egypt's case (along with the Philippines, Indonesia and Pakistan) it seems that their principal export is their own people. This is another theme woven throughout the novel, starting with Meshmesha's husband having to emigrate to France and Libya in search of work, and ending with a large scale migration to Canada, of numerous principal characters, towards the end of the novel. The pros and cons of Galeilia's (Leilia's) new "heaven" are aptly described.

Should one maintain ties with the past, or "move on" is another climatic question that the author handles well. I was convinced in reading this work that it HAD to be largely autobiographical. Although Hanna is Egyptian, and now living in Canada, she says that it is NOT. If so, and why should I doubt, it is an impressive work of empathy and imagination. 5-stars.

Engrossing look at two women striving for better lives

"Call me Leila" by N. G. Hanna is an engrossing and often unsettling look at the lives of two Egyptian women, set against the backdrop of their nation's often turbulent history over the past six decades. I was given a copy by the author in exchange for this review.

The story opens in early 2011 during the Arab Spring as crowds of demonstrators gather in Cairo's Tahrir Square for what would become known as the January 25 Revolution. Among the people in the square, who come from different backgrounds, religions and stations in Egyptian society, there is an awakening of hope: for freedom, for democracy, for justice.

The hope of Galeila, who flees to the square to escape her abusive husband, is that somehow among the sea of demonstrators she will find the father she has never met. But as Galeila and her mother, Meshmesha -- whose story is told in the early chapters -- know too well, the flip side of hope is despair, and there is plenty of that for these two women.

Born to a poor farming family in a northern city, after her mother's death Meshmesha is sent away at her stepmother's insistence to earn money as the servant for a well-to-do family in Cairo, where she is given a worn mattress to sleep atop on the kitchen floor: "This is a step up for someone like her," her mistress explained. "In her village, they sleep in dirt and live a life not much better than their livestock. She and the buffalo are no different," (Hanna, N.G. (2013-11-27). Call Me Leila (Kindle Locations 218-219). Illiterate and cut off from what little family she may have left on the farm, the tenuous nature of Meshmesha's existence is frighteningly revealed when she loses her job due to a misunderstanding. Where can she go? Who will help her? Who can stop those who want to take advantage of her? Sadly, not many years later these same questions will be asked by Galeila when Meshmesha dies suddenly.

They live in a culture centered around family, in which gender roles are more defined and males predominant. Marriages are often arranged to suit economic or personal needs. Interestingly, Galeila and Meshmesha are also Copts, the largest Christian group in predominantly Muslim Egypt and while different groups may mix at higher economic levels, the poor are isolated from and fearful of those outside their religion. During the revolution Galeila crosses these lines, setting into motion a chain of events that may eventually get her what she wants.

Although I enjoyed it, "Call Me Leila" is not a book I would normally pick up for myself. But one of the perks of being an amateur book reviewer is getting offered the opportunity to explore different genres, and some of the better reads I've had in the past few years have been books such as this that I would likely skip otherwise.

Another reviewer stated Call Me Leila is not a page-turner, and I would agree with that assessment, but I also encourage readers who may chafe at the pace to stick with it. Meshmesha and Galeila's story may resemble a fairy tale, but there are no magic godmothers or handsome princes to save the day. As the author told me in an email: "As for Galeila, there are many women like her who strive for a better life only to find themselves caught in a game which is not theirs." This means any gains achieved by these women must be hard-won, and are therefore more satisfying.

Love the Laws of Love

There is something about the books coming out of Prentiss Productions. Each book I read seems to evoke growth, awareness, and happiness. To create and maintain this type of perspective to share with the world is a true gift. I am an avid reader, but few writers elevate my consciousness and level of overall happiness. Each book provides life lessons ripe for adoption and bring a combination of joy and awe into my life. I found the passage Chris shared with his wife to be incredible. I sat down and wrote a letter to the love of my life about the love we will share. The book provided insight into what it takes to keep love alive. Prentiss truly teaches you the right steps to take to ensure a loving, successful relationship for yourself and your partner; he also shows you how to heal unhealthy patterns from the past and realize who is your ideal partner and why. Great relationships are not an accident, and the sacred space we use to create these relationships is often forgotten, neglected or unknown. Beckerman, an Oregon cardiologist who is the heart expert at WebMD.com and MedHelp.org, takes a personalized approach to weight loss, claiming, "You can't treat everyone the same way even if they have the same problem." His plan is divided into three phases--a two-week period covering what readers can do "Today," three weeks of tips for "Every Day," and long-term options called "Your Way." "Today" ideas include finding a weight-loss buddy or joining a support group, as well as Internet solutions such as signing up for automatic Flex Diet texts, blogging, and joining Twitter. "Every Day" suggestions include eating beans, tofu, and fish once a week (recipes included), avoiding all-you-can-eat restaurants, and refraining from finishing off your child's dinner. In "Your Way," he offers a range of exercise choices and even suggests dining on unappetizing blue plates, eating only until 80% full, or ordering a kid's meal at fast food restaurants for better portion control. About the Author
Dr. James Beckerman is the WebMD Heart Expert and the MedHelp Weight Loss and Healthy Lifestyle Expert.  He graduated from Harvard College and Harvard Medical School and trained as a cardiologist at Massachusetts General Hospital and Stanford University.  He sees patients every day in the Providence Heart and Vascular Institute in Portland, Oregon.  Dr. Beckerman serves on the Oregon Governor's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports and is the team cardiologist for the Portland Timbers Major League Soccer team.

Brilliant in its Simplicity

Dr. Beckerman has succeeded in writing an accessible and realistic approach to heart health. With our busy lifestyles, many of us are simply unable to implement a "paradigm shift" in our lifestyle. Dr. Beckerman's 200 or so suggestions are well researched and provide an opportunity for success, not failure. I will recommend this to my patients!

Finally a no-nonsense approach to weight loss and living healthy!

This is the first book on dieting and a healthy approach to living a fulfilled lifestyle. It's easy to read and informative. It is common sense in writing! I have lost 5 pounds in the first 10 days. This book helps organize your daily routine and it's fun to read. Good work Dr. Beckerman!

Weight Loss 101 for Complete Newbies

Don't be mislead by the title- there is no "diet" in this book. What you'll find instead are 200 lifestyle change suggestions. For the most part, they are very sensible ideas that will indeed help you be healthier. However, unless you're a complete newbie to weight loss they are almost all completely obvious things that you've heard a zillion times before. Weigh yourself daily! Keep a food diary! Drink six glasses of water a day! Take a multivitamin! Get a good night's sleep! Eat breakfast every day! Don't eat out of vending machines! Cut out sugar-sweetened beverages! Take a walk after dinner! Avoid high fructose corn syrup! Find a weight loss buddy!

I could probably count on a single hand how many of the 200 suggestions were actually new to me. What a waste of time.
