A good effort, but incomplete

I purchased this book with the hope it would assist me in identifying the names of four patterns of silver (all of them pieces I had inherited.) I knew the manufacturers of each piece and knew the approximate date of manufacture (ranging from 1895 to 1956); this book could only give me the names of two of them. Although Maryanne Dolan gives a lot of background about the great American silver companies and their histories, there is no index to refer to; I had to read through each company's "biography" to learn (finally!) that Wm. Rogers was brought by International Sterling.
For a silver enthusiast who is interested in researching many different patterns, this wouldn't be my first choice as a reference. Overall, though, it was informative.

Not the best.

I bought this book along with Sterling Flatware by Tere Hagan. I find it difficult to use and poorly organized. She has a lot of information on certian patterns and makers but little on others. There is no index and information is incomplete. I use it as a back up to Hagan's book as she sometimes will have a pattern that Hagen dosen't have. Neither book is complete and this book has some information and a couple of Manufactures that Hagan dosen't cover still both books are valuable but even together not complete. I still have quite a few unknowns in my collection.

This book is more like a short pamphlet. It typically gives nothing more than 1 (!?!) short sentence in answer to each question, without explaining the J2EE technologies in any detail whatsoever. I skimmed through it in just a few minutes. It is so lacking, I wonder if I am missing something. In my opinion, it is not worth the $9.99 I paid for it... $0.99 is probably more appropriate. I want to be fair and give the author the benefit-of-the-doubt, but I feel the author just wrote this to make a quick buck. I don't much like writing negative reviews, so sorry ... please forgive. Don't say I didn't warn you, though.

Henrik Vejlgaard, M.a.,M.sc., is a pioneer in trend sociology, the study of the trend process. Combining a background of social science and communication, he consults with a wide cross section of companies and industries on the topics of innovation and product development. He has lectured on lifestyle and trend sociology at the University of Copenhagen and the University of Arhus School of Business, both in Denmark. About the Author

Catherine LaBerta is a Full Professor in the Computer Science/Mathematics Department at Erie Community College in Buffalo, NY.  She is also an adjunct professor at SUNY-Buffalo.  Catherine teaches courses that range from Intro to Computers to Programming in C++ to Web Development.  Originally a math major, Catherine took additional courses in computers and programming and found a field that clicked for her.  She enjoys the constant changes in the computer and related fields as it forces one to keep up and constantly learn.  Not a total book worm, she loves skiing in Purgatory, CO, one of her favorite spots. She also enjoys boating—especially schooner trips off the coast of Maine— and will always be working on that golf game.

Book is too overwhelming for starters, MyITLab is a joke

I am a computer professional with over 15 years of experience, and I have reviewed this book for a college class...Catherine goes into detail from the specifics of how a computer works to how technology affects your daily life. Which is a good start for someone who's taking an introductory class that has no experience in computer or whatsoever. However, I feel like she tends to write too much to get to a specific point. I should note that the "bold-ed vocabulary" on each chapter is ridiculously too much. In my opinion, this book CAN be overwhelming for students.

I would rate 3/5 - 2.5/5 stars for the book.

I rated one star on Amazon NOT on the basis of the book, however on the basis of the supplied MyITLab on it. For those don't know, MyITLab is Pearson Education's online module for you to submit assignments...read e-books...and finally testing on book materials.

Now I don't know who made this website, but MyITLab ONLY supports Internet Explorer, which is a pretty disappointing factor. The registration code I was supplied did not enable me to access the e-book despite that I have the physical copy. (Most online modules let you have an e-book and a physical version).

The most important point though, is the automated markings conducted by the online module. Most multiple choice questions (randomly generated from a data bank) have either 2 answers to it or no answers to it at all. They basically force you to choose one and bet your marks against it. I don't know who came up with these, but you can't be serious! I did the multiple choices myself and could only get 70-80%, and I was told the class average was around 50% or below. 70% students were pretty rare. Some questions had confusing wording and I couldn't even understand what the question had asked.

If any instructors want to use this book, go ahead, but PLEASE, do NOT use MyITLab as a source of assignment submission and testing. Create your own questions based on topics in the book.

College students!!!! BEWARE!!!!!

If you do not buy this book at your local campus book store, you will not get the course ID for MYITLab, where you will more than likely suffer the terrible horrors MYITlab. If you do not know what MYITLab is, you are the lucky one, if you are taking a "hybrid/online" class that uses MYITLab. i suggest not and save yourself. And there is a code to sign up onto this myitlab, if you buy this used you do not get the code and must pay 80$ to obtain it. Again i, a college student, do not recommend this. The course of action i do recommend is gather your fellow classmates and write angry letters to your teachers about how much myitlab sucks.

Good book for the introductory computer class

Fourteen chapters, 11th edition, covering everything from input output storage to enterprise computing.
I like the layout of the chapters, the exercises in the end of the chapters. The team projects are
really informative.

The only piece missing is people in the business, such as Steve Jobs, Mark Zuckerberg, etc.

I recommend this book to all professors and students.

A tour de force first-person account of the life of Samuel L. Gravely, Jr.

"Trailblazer, The U.S. Navy's First Black Admiral", is a tour de force first-person account of the life of Samuel L. Gravely, Jr. In his youth, he learned well the lessons of Jim Crow in his home-town of Richmond, Virginia. In spite of the various obstacles placed in his path by a narrow-minded society, he went on to become one of the first African Americans to be commissioned as an officer and, ultimately, as the very first African American officer to attain flag rank in the U.S. Navy.

Admiral Gravely tells his story with the help of Paul Stillwell, who is a Navy veteran, editor and author of "The Golden Thirteen: Recollections of the First Black Naval Officers." In the Trailblazer book, we see through Admiral Gravely's eyes and in his voice how he climbed the ladder in the Navy to become the first African American to command a ship, the first to command a fleet, and the first to become an admiral in 1971. His ground-breaking achievements were a tribute to his deeply ingrained strength of character, fiercely dedicated temperament, and dogged perseverance.

Trailblazer also details the personal legacy of Admiral Gravely, the husband and family man, as seen through the eyes of his devoted and loving wife, Alma, including their whirlwind courtship, which lead to their marriage in 1946 - a rich and full union that lasted 58 years - to the death of their beloved older son Robbie in 1978, and finally to Alma's making peace with the certainty of his impending death.

"Sammie," as Alma affectionately referred to the Admiral, very wisely drew from a diverse pool of experiences, as well as from leadership examples provided by his fellow officers, in modeling his own command style during his impressive naval service career. He became THE role model to emulate and set a fine example for thousands of African American naval officers who came after him.

Admiral Gravely poignantly describes one of the more distasteful aspects that made an excruciatingly painful and enduring impression on him during his first duty posting, after his graduation from midshipman school in December 1941. He had returned to Camp Robert Smalls, where he had started his naval service two years earlier, only to find that he was still living in a very clearly segregated world. The naval training station at Great Lakes had quarters for white officers, but not for him. The officer's club was open to white officers, but not to him. To add insult to injury, after he pulled daily watches encompassing the whole camp, he had to return to the distinctly separate "Black camp" each night to sleep. Gravely, regarding this blatant disparity in the service ranks (and society as a whole) as a formidable obstacle, noted, "This was one of the hardest things for me to take of anything that happened to me during my Navy career."

Admiral Gravely always relished and welcomed any and every opportunity for additional training, personal enrichment, and overall challenge of being a part of something new. Continuous educational growth formed the bulwark of his life's mantra. He never knew what he would encounter in the next stage of his life, but he knew for certain what he was leaving behind.
He just wanted to be "a regular sailor."

Samuel L. Gravely was "a regular sailor" ... and then some! As Rear Admiral Barry C. Black, USN (Ret.) said in his advanced praise of the book, "Vice Admiral Samuel L. Gravely, Jr. blazed a trail of courage, hospitality, humility, excellence, faithfulness, and patriotism. His pioneering accomplishments opened doors of opportunity for thousands, enabling me to become the Chief of Navy Chaplains and the 62nd Chaplain of the Unites States Senate. I stand on his strong shoulders."

Trailblazer is an inspiring story about an exceptionally unique barrier-breaking and visionary gentleman, Vice Admiral Samuel L. Gravely, Jr., USN. It is a very humbling regular sailor's account of triumph and growth in the face of adversity and of his awe inspiring legacy to our Nation and our U.S. Navy.

One certainly need not be a fan or student of the military realm to appreciate the dedication and drive of this remarkable man, who overcame, with great courage, grace, and poise, every challenge he faced as the Trailblazer.

Back to the Future...of ISM

The year I started in my Computer Science degree in 1974 was also the final year for the first ever graduating class in Computer Science at my university. From 1974-78, all but one of my Computer Science courses were done using punched cards.

Around the same time as I was starting on what has now become a 35 year career (and counting) IBM was defining and using what they referred to as their "yellow books". These books described "A Management System for the Information Business" which became their Information Systems Architecture (ISMA) in 1979. Some of the practices covered included:
* Managing IT services, IT processes, the IT organization, technology and information
* The business perspective and the management perspective
* Configuration, change and release management
* Project management
* Problem control and management
* Service level management and service marketing
* Availability management and the CFIA (Component Failure Impact Analysis)
* Capacity management
* Financial management
* Infrastructure management
* Application management
* The management system
* IT services
* IT systems planning and monitoring
* Process and management system assessments, assessment techniques and audit planning.

Over the past 35 years, while the sophistication and capabilities of our technology has grown exponentially beyond anything we could have possibly imagined in 1974, surprisingly our practices for managing IT have not. For a time our practices certainly became more complex as the "yellow books" got rolled into ITIL V1 in 1988, which became V2 ten or so years later, then V3 in 2007, of course the most recent 2011 version which has unleashed yet another round of debates as to what really is the definition of a Service. Really? After 35 years we still can't agree on what a Service is actually all about?

This descent into IT operations complexity coincided with the explosion in other areas of IT complexity that begat all the bodies of knowledge (BoKs) (PMBOK, BABOK, SWEBOK, etc.) and the plethora of other methods and tools to support it all. Complexity yes, sophistication not so much.

Now the pendulum seems to swinging towards less complexity, more simplicity and ultimately, in my mind, more sophistication as Agile and Lean practices are overtaking the BoKs and a recently released book called the "The ISM Method: Past, Present and Future of IT Service Management" by Hoving and Van Bon is taking Service Management back to its roots in focusing on the core processes required to run IT. Simplicity is back in vogue.

The first section of the ISM takes us on a journey of the history of IT Service Management from ISMA at IBM in 1979, Looijen's triple management model in 1986 (information, application, and technical management), ITIL V1 in 1988, Prince2, COBIT, BS15000 (precursor to ISO 20000), MOF, ITIL V2, ISM (first introduced in 2007), etc., all the way up to ITIL 2012.

And what a journey is has been! All of the above (save for ISM) were primarily presented as "models", namely reference models, not implementation models. Hoving and van Bon rightly point out that "It also appears that none of the models cover all of the aspects that are required to implement a model. In particular, support by associated products, organizational integration, and attention to culture are not sufficiently present". That is, has been, and always will be the rub for reference models - great in theory, not so great in what they have to say about how they get to be in every day practice.

It is quite interesting that ITIL was purported to be a set of "best practices" in V2 and was elevated to the level of "good practices" by the V3 authors. I'll let you think about that for a moment and draw your own conclusions based on Hoving and van Bon's assertions above.

They go on to say that what has been missing is an implementation method; "A method is characterized by a way of thinking, a way of modelling, a way of working, a way of managing, and way of support. None of the models discussed score on all points". ISM is offered as just such a method.

Chapter two looks at the state of the ITSM practice today by focusing on what the customer wants from ITSM, which they describe as having "access to information delivery that provides his/her business with functionality as required. Furthermore, the customer wants to be supported in using the delivered functionality" which gets even more simply stated as "An IT Service is the delivery of functioning IT functionality".

Much of the rest of the chapter details the basic requirements of a customer (demand), a provider (supply), and for an ITSM framework as well as the scope of an ITSM framework, a justification or standardization, and the inspiration that led to the creation of the ISM method.

Chapter 3 is about the future and gets into the specifics of the ISM and states that it is "designed to improve IT Service Delivery through structuring, standardizing, and simplifying ITSM" based on their experiences over many years that "ITIL implementations had little or no success". In some cases these projects have spanned 15-20 years as IT shops have tried to implement each successive version of ITIL and "have only process descriptions that are hardly known among their staff and are rarely used as they were meant to be, let along yielding any demonstrable results". ISM is presented as a method to take full advantage of the opportunities presented by standardization. ISM is also meant to simplify and to devolve decisions making to the people doing the work rather than having overly detailed process steps that are difficult to apply in the hectic world of day-to-day IT operations.

This is a very similar approach to how Agile works in the product/software development space - have simple processes that allow those doing the work to make in-situ decisions. Simple but holistic is good, especially when you are pressed for time and need to make critical operational decisions. Enable your people and then trust them to do the right things is a key message - one that is also starting to emerge in other domains and areas of modern work. The chapter then addresses the development and basic structure of ISM, and the choices that resulted in the ISM method being created.

The last two chapters describe the practical (read applied side) of ISM including a detailed step-by-step description of the method which includes objectives, definitions, sub-processes and steps, interfaces, management, the organization, and the tooling for all six processes that make up the method (Service Level Management, Quality Management, Change Management, Incident Management, Configuration Management, and Operations Management). Each process is described using simple flow charts with descriptions (using the attributes listed above) - no BPMN here. And therein lies it simplicity. The goals for each are clearly expressed in one sentence each. Sub-processes are identified and each flow chart box is described.

I would call the above process list as the "vital few" ITSM processes, that if done well, would enable any IT operations group or IT service provider to delight its customers as they quite simply want "the delivery of functioning IT functionality". It's when we try to do more than that, or try to do things the customer does not value that we get ourselves and our customers in trouble.

According to the ISM Portal, the ISM has a host of tool vendors that provide out-of-the-box support for the method and the claim is that ISM can be up and running in most shops in 3-4 months. This should be a claim to easily validate through customer references. The ITSM journey was long, painful, and incredibly expensive for most organizations in the host of failed ITIL projects masquerading as ITSM. There is no longer a need to continue to propagate these failures - but you need to focus on the vital few. This is the mantra in Agile and Lean and in the radical management practices now happening in leading organizations like Amazon, Apple, Google, W.L. Gore, and Zappos.

In the same vein as DevOps and Lean IT, I think "The ISM Method: Past, Present and Future of IT Service Management" should be a must read for anyone in IT operations who cares about understanding what customers actually want and have the courage to start delivering it.

As long as I can remember, I've made up adventures. I admit the early creative stories featured me riding the range with Roy Rogers and Dale Evans and saving the West. What a disappointment to learn that Roy was exclusively committed to Dale! Eventually, my best friend from across the street and I decided to become better detectives than Nancy Drew. We drove our parents and neighbors crazy sticking our pert little noses where they didn't belong. About that time I started writing down my adventures, but mostly I was a reader. Not until I read Nora Roberts' early novels did I decide to create my own romance manuscripts. My road to publishing was a lot slower than Nora's was. No surprise there! I still read Nora's books—as well as those of countless other authors—but now I write full time. Unless life interferes, that is. My Hero and I live one a small acreage in the ranching and horse country of North Central Texas. Finally, my childhood dream has come true and I’m in the midst of cowboys. Our two daughters are grown and in their own homes not far away. Living with Hero and me now are Webster, our sweet black Shih Tzu, and our two shorthaired cats: Sebastian, a large black and white tuxedo who thinks he's our watchcat; and Bailey Erin, a shy apricot tabby who mostly stays in my office. When I'm not writing, I love spending time with family, reading, traveling with Hero, browsing antique malls and estate sales, and digging into family history and genealogy. HIGH STAKES BRIDE - Book 2 of the Men of Stone Mountain delivers a Winning Hand!

I truly have loved reading the Men of Stone Mountain series by (in my opinion) the Queen of Western Romance, Caroline Clemmons. When I first read Book One of the series, BRAZOS BRIDE, I fell in love with the hunky hero, Micah Stone and felt he was my favorite among the three Stone brothers introduced. But, after reading Book Two of the series, HIGH STAKES BRIDE, gotta admit that Zach is now my favorite brother. I have a feeling that when the much anticipated Book Three comes out, I will also find Joel Stone my "new" favorite. You might consider me fickle, but the reason the hero in each book endeared themselves so much to this reader is because Caroline Clemmons has such an amazing skill at creating characters that are unforgettable, each with their own unique personality and voice. You not only see their strengths but also gain deeper insight into their scars and hidden wounds that make up the multi-dimensional man they have become. So, it is only right and proper that the reader should fall madly in love with each hero of each book, and think no one compares to him.

I also very much loved the heroine in HIGH STAKES BRIDE, Mary Alice Price, who is just as brave and determined to take control of her life as she is inherently sweet, honest, amusing, and wholly endearing. One of the first things about her that won me over was her cute personality and often amusing habit of seeking intervention and/or understanding through impromptu silent prayer during the many challenges and life-threatening events that she faces on her journey. She definitely has an engaging personality that leaps off the page. Pairing her up with a retired Texas Ranger who's just been jilted at the altar for the second time, and this time by a Mail Order Bride, is pure genius. He doesn't trust women and wants nothing to do with any female not a member of his family. Alice is on the run from murderous step-brothers who staked and lost her in a poker game. All she wants now is to escape to Atlanta and start a new life. Without giving too much away, both Zach and Alice decide to gamble on one another temporarily in order to achieve their respective goals and go their separate ways. A bargain is made that requires alot of bluffing to friends and family, and the temptation for both Alice and Zach to just fold and walk away is a constant struggle. Danger is ever near, but the biggest risk Alice and Zach face just may be losing their hearts. A must read, and a keeper for your library. Am really looking forward to Book 3 in the series, and optimistic that the series will continue with secondary characters introduced in the first two books, including a future look at Seth Stone (introduced in this book).

I loved this story as much as I loved the one preceding it!! This is truely a wonderful series! From the very beginning it captures you attention and I had a seriously hard time putting it down! I can not wait for the next in the series to hear the last Stone Brothers' story!!

Let's Pretend

19th century Texas - The men are brave and strong, and women are few and far between. Zach Stone has a ranch with a nice stone house, but he needs a wife. Mary Alice Price has nothing but troubles. Desperation forces injured Alice into Zach's camp, and a hero has to be heroic to the damsel in distress.
On the journey to Zach's ranch, they add 7 year-old orphan, Seth Barnes, and his dog Harry to the group. Desperation forces Zach and Alice to agree to a brief pretend engagement. Zach's aunts, brothers, an attentive preacher, and assorted neighbors make it difficult to just pretend an attraction. A life as Zach's wife tempts Mary Alice to re-think her plans to go to Atlanta. Zach soon finds it hard to send his pretend bride packing.
The pretended engagement is frought with problems; Alice's green hair, a smitten preacher, Zach's once white but now bright yellow shirt, and a growing mutual love that can survive the final knowledge about Alice's step-family.
