Full disclosure... I'm one of the contributors to the series of two books... though my name is incorrectly listed as "David LaRue" in more than one place! Doesn't matter... Some of the biggest names in magic and mentalism have contributed routines to these books... and they prove positively what some of us have known for a long time, mentalism plays great for kids! Few kid show books contain nearly this many routines... and they are all audience tested. Some routines are described a touch too briefly, but experienced performers will quickly understand the premise. Many rutines use easily available standard props, while others will require some construction. There are solid lessons in kid show performing contained here.

An introductory text cannot possibly cover all of these topics, hence the emphasis of the third edition remains on the physical principles and the application of these principles to processes. The major difference relative to the second edition will be the emphasis on interactions between process and design. Capabilities and limitations of processes will be highlighted to show what they mean in terms of design possibilities, and design modifications will be suggested for ease of manufacture. Impact on the environment and possibilities for recycling will be woven into the entire text.

This book might seem dense at first glance, however, it was one of the best textbooks I've read. The chapters are well organized and the content is very thorough without being too wordy.

If you're required to buy this for a class, take the time to read it. This textbook helped my grade more than any of my other classes.

Amazing Coverage of Material

This book is an amazing review of material properties and just manufacturing in general. Each chapter starts of with a brief intro and then goes into a brief synopsis of each process. For example the welding chapter went over the types of welding, and then went on for 65 pages on a description on each type of welding. It was an amazing way to cover the material and I love reading it. A must have for Mechanical Engineers.

Ultimate German Beginner-Intermediate (Coursebook)

I must start off by saying that I have never had a German class, neither at any formal institution nor with a tutor, friend, or the like. Therefore, I cannot judge this text against any formal course of German.
But, I am very interested in learning languages, and have used many textbooks in the past, even some made for use in a school environment. So, I feel that I can give a fairly good critique of this book.
Out of any foreign language textbook I have used, I find that this book is, if not THE best, one of the best I have had the experience of learning a language with. I am self-taught in all of the languages I have been learning, except for three years of Spanish I took in school. Therefore, I know that textbooks need to have certain aspects to be able to be used sufficiently for self-study, and this book has them.
Although there is no CD, many resources can be found online for the pronunciation of German, and the pronunciation notes in the beginning of the book, I find, are very good ones. Therefore, I do not feel that pronunciation should be much of a struggle to learn.
I very much like the structure of the chapters in this book, and find that it works very well for learners. Each chapter begins with a Dialogue or two, and their translation(s). These are not too difficult and not too long or too short, and they are written to be able to be mostly understood based on knowledge from previous chapters. Following the Dialogue, there is a section for Grammar and Structure, which teaches material a reader has not yet learned from a previous chapter. There are then vocabulary lists and exercises, to reinforce the material. By the end of a chapter, a reader should be able to understand the dialogue, or at least almost all of it.

Excellent for a German "over-the-counter" course!

The best way to learn german is by living in a German-speaking country. If you can't do that, this course will take you a long way toward proficiency in German. BUT, I would say that the accompanying CD's are a must for the novice. I took 4 years in college, and still read German newspapers on line, but wanted something to brush up. I have used several language courses (Barron's, Pimsleur, Tell Me More, etc.) I would rank this one in the top 2. Somehow, they strike a good balance of natural conversation exposure, phrase-learning, useful vocabulary, grammar, and culture tips. They pack more into their course than most. As far as how advanced you can go with Ultimate German, they do a good job there, too. Normally, passive voice, subjunctive, and other more difficult grammar structures are either not covered by other language courses, or given shallow coverage. The Ultimate German advanced book, and even the beginner-intermediate levels cover these, and in a very natural way...much earlier on than other courses. My library had both sets. I ripped the CD's (legal) and burned them onto discs, as well as put them on my MP3. I then bought just the book on Amazon. That way, I got a great course for pennies on the dollar. I can't imagine that the "new complete course" can do much better, so I went with this last version before they changed over. Glad I did. Viel vergnügen!

It tottaly worth the price

I already read the "The Everything Learning German" (more than twice...) by Ed Swick and I would say that the Swick's book is more didactic and easy to read for a truly beginner, even though I'm still in lesson 11 in the "Ultimate German". There are some points that are said in the "Ultimate German" book that Swick's doesn't covers and vice-versa and appears also that the Swick's is more updated. But anyway, the book is a good "next-step" and a cheap one, you would spend some months to fully study it.

Much mentioned; seldom read

This is a new edition of the Harvard version of Justice Holmes' classic "The Common Law." It supercedes an earlier HUP edition published in 1963 which was edited by the esteemed Holmes scholar, Mark DeWolfe Howe. The original and continuing publisher of the official version of the book (first published in 1881) is Little, Brown. This edition is edited and has a fine brief introduction by Ted White, the current leading Holmes scholar, who teaches at the law school of the University of Virginia, and has written (among other books on the Justice) "Justice Olilver Wendell Holmes: Law and the Inner Self," certainly our finest and most interesting biography of the Justice.

Like its predecessor HUP volume, this edition contains the important marginal notes that Holmes entered into his own copy of the book (now in the HLS library), which do not appear in the official Little, Brown editions. Also included is Howe's "Glossary of Legal Terms." Professor White has added an illuminating chronology of the Justice's life, a helpful short bibliography, as well as his perceptive 26-page introduction. The typography is far superior to the earlier HUP edition. The only problem I can recount is that this edition (as was the case with Howe's edition) does not contain facsimile pages, so that the reset pages do not match the Little, Brown page numbers. Almost all citations to the book found in the literature cite to the Little, Brown version--so this is somewhat a disadvantage.

Unfortunately, not even Professor White's additions can make this an easy and readable book. I venture to suggest that very few of those who call themselves students of Holmes (including myself) have read much of the book. Moreover, having been published in 1881, it was long ago subplanted by more recent research in the field. Nonetheless, as White points out in his introduction, there are nuggets here for those interested in Holmes' view of the law, which in large measure sparked a few legal revolutions, including sociological jurisprudence and legal realism to name just two. This new edition makes this classic available in a reasonably-priced and pleasant format for those with the endurance to read it.

Valuable analysis still of our legal system

Holmes set out to explain from whence our American system of law arrived in it's present form in a series of lectures that may best be understood after practicing law but are accessible to any one who takes the time to read carefully what Holmes leaned by looking back. Holmes did the hard work with his research and has a gorgeous writing style.

Required reading (listening) for an understanding of our basic system of laws

Justice Holmes research and writing are impeccable and interesting. I read this 30 years ago and recently listened to the audible book, The "common law" is the basic theory of laws that forms the basis of the system of justice in those countries and states settled by English speaking people. Parts of it apply to much of the rest of the world. This book is an explanation of how and why the system evolved into our present justice system. The reader does an excellent job and I recommend this book without reservation. It is most interesting and should be required reading in high school or college.

American musical theater has long been considered integral to gay male culture, but what does it have to offer lesbian viewers? Plenty, argues Wolf, an English professor at the University of Texas at Austin and a self-confessed "feminist musical theater fan." While many people generally think of 1950s musicals as having a conservative slant and upholding conventional social norms, Wolf argues that the myriad "funny girls" of the '50s and '60s specifically Ethel Merman, Julie Andrews, Mary Martin and Barbra Streisand repeatedly appeared in roles that explicitly critiqued postwar gender norms. Wolf frequently insists she's not concerned with figuring out the actual sexual orientation of these actresses (though she often pauses to do so, decoding the Hollywood gossip surrounding Martin's marriage to gay actor Richard Halliday with obvious glee). Nor does she argue that they actually "played" lesbians on stage or in film. Rather, she's interested in using the tools of feminist and queer theory to examine the women's performances and public images. Her analysis of Martin's "tomboy" star persona (particularly as it is presented in South Pacific and Peter Pan) is shrewd, as is her discussion of Streisand's unconventional beauty and her explicit Jewishness. Unfortunately, Wolf only briefly considers why the genre of the musical itself might lend itself to such interpretive practice, and some readers may wish for a more general analysis of musical theater rather than such close attention to the minute details of these four individuals' performance histories.

Interesting for hardcore musical fans

This isn't the most exciting book I've read but if you're a hardcore musical theatre fan, it's worth a read. Many of the author's arguments -- pretty much seeing lesbian overtones EVERYWHERE -- are a bit silly, but she also makes some good points. It's a point of view we rarely hear so that's worth something, and may get some people thinking about musicals differently, which is worthwhile...

Musical Theatre Scholarship Grows Up

With Stacy Wolf's A Problem Called Maria, musical theatre scholarship finally grows up. Wolf's study of four female icons of the musical stage (Mary Martin, Ethel Merman, Julie Andrews, and Barbra Streisand) is rooted squarely in performance, something many musical theatre historians claim but seldom accomplish. Not only will the book fascinate musical theatre buffs, it will also appeal to a wider audience interested in twentieth century popular culture. Wolf's slant here is the exploration of these female stars through a feminist lens, which offers new insights into the appeal of the mid-century Broadway musical, a genre that until recently has often been associated with gay men, at least in terms of gender studies. Wolf makes clear that the musical, as a cherished American art form, rightly belongs to everyone. More than that, her approach extends beyond the usual emphasis on the written text and score to discuss what these great performers actually did onstage, which is a refreshing approach, to say the least. I would recommend this book without reservation to anyone interested in the golden age of the Broadway musical, and, more broadly, to those interested in the performance of gender within a cultural studies context.

Looking at the Theatre with a Different Lens

I am reminded of the old story that a man who only has a hammer sees every problem as a nail. When you view the American musical theater through a lesbian lens you come up with some decidedly different views of Maria in the Sound of Music. Professor Wolf concentrates her study on four actresses of the 50's and early 60's: Mary Martin as Nellie in 'South Pacific,' Ethel Merman as Momma Rose in 'Gypsy,' Julie Andrews in 'My Fair Lady' and Guenevere in 'Camelot,' and Barbra Streisand as Fanny Brice in 'Funny Girl.' Obviously she finds lesbian tendancies in these performances, and her analysis is most interesting to follow.

The musical theatre scene is constantly changing. I would be most interested in her analysis of more current plays such as Les Miz, Phantom of the Opera, and Wicked -- where the two female leads are friends, but in which I do not see lesbian tendancies or messages. Can't two women just be friends?

Not as great as some of the older books

Cardeno C has written 3 of my all time favorite m/m romances - I just love Where He Ends and I Begin (Home Series), Love at First Sight (Home Series) and He Completes Me (Home Series) I've reread all of them frequently. So I truly love some of his/her work. But lately I haven't, and that's a disappointment for me.

Strong Enough just wasn't deep enough for me. Emilio is a very sweet 22 year old, but I would have liked it better if he were 26 (or if Spencer were 32) the 16 year age difference did bother me, as well as the life experience difference. Also, in her previous books, both men clearly brought strengths to the relationship. I felt that Emilio brought much more to the relationship than Spencer ever did, who was a bit too damsel in distress for me. That being said, I read this from beginning to end, and if it was the first Cardeno C book I had ever read, I might have liked it more, but it pales when compared to his/her older books and that makes it a weaker entry for me.

Sweetly, lovingly, and nicely done

What a wonderful story. Done with humor, passion, compassion and sexiness, too. I found myself rooting for Spencer and Emilio from the opening pages and wasn't disappointed at stories end. Author dealt with difficult subjects without unneeded misunderstandings, contrived breakups or forced emotional breakdowns. It was a beautiful love story written very well. Worth the price.

Amazingly romantic M/M story !!

I really enjoyed this sweet, loving, caring, mushy, honest book. We get deep characters that we like right away, an intriguing story, and amazing, erotic sex scenes, yummy. Everything you could want is here. This "love-at-first-sight" tale is about a construction worker and the college professor, seeing each other as they are caught looking at each other. 38 yr. old Spencer, is 5'9", 160 lbs., soft, beginning to grey, and has big dimples, and apparently just what Emilio is looking for. Emilio, 22, cut muscles, chiseled features, and perfect, is a licensed electrician, with a big Spanish family, and his targeting Spencer. Bold Emilio catches up to shy Spencer in the parking lot and asks him if he's interested in getting together. Spencer is shy, hesitant and amazed at how stunning Emilio is up close. After Emilio bulldozes his hesitation, he says yes. And so it began. Emilio knows he's the "one". Spencer has a past that makes him leery, he's socially limited and had a stifling family, but the guys get to talk everything over, explain, share, and accept, with total honesty and devotion. It does your heart good to watch the men find their passions, their deep emotions, their unconditional feelings. Loved it !
Loved Emilio, what a great character !
Emilio is stronger, bigger, rougher, gorgeous, skilled and kind, and he made Spencer feel alive for the first time in a long while. Spencer finally tells Emilio his event that causes him problems yet today, and his ex cause some trouble, there's family to meet, etc..
I highly recommend this lovely tale of needs being met, strong men taking what they want, overcoming obstacles, and true love.
Highly recommend. ENJOY !!

This story has non-descript, retellings of date rape of a male, and also of a female.
Plus the way it affects their lives today, each in a different way.

Good, but could be better

The book "Make a 2D Arcade Game in a weekend" starts of with a brief overview of how to install Unity and configure it to your likings. The author tells about assets, how to import them and how to organize your Unity project. The chapters that follow lay the foundations of the game you're going to build in a logical way, by talking about Prefabs, Physics and Scripting. Although the author explains each script, it is recommended to have some knowledge of C#. The new UI capabilities are being used and also Music and Sound effects are not forgotten. After that it's time for a simple menu system and some special effects. The book concludes with a chapter about building and publishing your game on different platforms. Even Cloud building is demonstrated.

Although the author does a great job teaching you how to build a simple block breaker game including powerups, sound and UI in a short time period, it must be said that there are some things that he forgets to mention. You can however fill in most of these things by yourself because of the knowledge you've gained throughout the book.

Too many errata, too many missing steps, and poor formatting

This book has several critical errata in the first programming chapter. This means that you are extraordinarily frustrated for hours before you think to look for errata on the Internet.

Thereafter, it doesn't really get much better. The author writes step by step directions which sometimes seems to omit steps, and he writes them in prose, making it nearly impossible to follow and make sure you have done everything. As a life-long software engineer, I found this book extraordinarily frustrating to work through with my son.
