Admirable,-- an unexpected and surprisingly sensitive find.

Quite honestly I did not know about this book until I learned about it while reading NBC correspondent Don Teague's book Saved by Her Enemy: An Iraqi woman's journey from the heart of war to the heartland of America. In the former the author wrote about a young Iraqui woman turned translator he helped save from certain death while she was employed helping Americans in her native country. Between Two Worlds: Escape from Tyranny: Growing up in the Shadow of Saddamis a remarkable book written by an Iraqui woman herself. Unlike Teague's translator, who came from more humble beginnings, the author of this book was born into privilege, the daughter of Saddam Hussein's former personal pilot. You would not have expected to have such a woman end up championing the cause of many abused women. It took being raped by her husband of an arranged marriage to inspire the author to passionately start helping women like herself.

As the book jacket informs us the author, Zainab Salbi, is the founder and president of Women for Women International, "a nonprofit organization providing women survivors to move from crisis to stability and build peace one woman at a time." Salbi is a very intelligent and highly educated woman holding degrees from George Mason University and the London School of Economics. She wrote the book in conjunction with Laurie Becklund, "an award-winning Los Angeles journalist and author...A former LOS ANGELES TIMES reporter, she wrote the first story about Salbi in 1991, when Zainab was a young woman stranded in America due to the Gulf War." It is at that time the author had just left her abusive husband and found herself unable to return to her native country.

The book begins with Salbi writing about her growing up in Iraq where her family was placed in the uneviable position of having to (more or less forcibly)socialize with Saddam Hussein. The author vividly describes her impressions of the dictator and her knowledge of the fear he instilled in all those around him. Salbi's mother fearing that her daughter might herself become a victim if she remained in Iraq strongly encouraged Zainab to marry one of her countrymen already in the United States thus having a place to which she could find refuge. Instead Zainab became a victim of this man. She tolerated ill treatment for quite some time before the ultimate insult--marital rape-- at which point she decided to leave her husband. After a divorce and some time had passed the author found someone who was truly kind and supportive of her endeavors. Along with her new husband she founded Women to Women International, the first to benefit from being the many women who had been forced into "rape camps" in Bosnia.

This is truly an inspirational book. I am not surprised to learn that the author has made frequent apperances on the Oprah Winfrey show. Winfrey, as many of us know, herself has done much to empower women to escape abusive situations. I would strongly recommend this book especially to all women who have ever suffered ill treatment, work with victims of abuse or aspire to one day.

Great Story

I have thoroughly enjoyed both books in the Blood Moon series. I can't wait for the third book. The only things that kept me from giving this a 5 star rating was several instances of verb tense errors and punctuation errors that caused confusion for the reader. There was a place or two where the wrong word was used. For example, "her taught flesh" instead of "taut flesh" . This was just an example, it wasn't the exact wording used...at least I don't think so. Again, wonderful story, good suspense, intriguing characters and it moves at a good pace. The ending did not seem rushed providing plenty of time to resolve the problems and still leave the reader with a happy ending.

I've just read the first 2 books "Blood Moon Rising". While both are fairly short they are well developed. You can't help but love the brothers and their mates. It's a slightly different take on this wolf clan but worth it. The brothers meet their mates while protecting them from witches who practice rather scary black magic. I can't wait for book 3.

Great Read!!!

I thoroughly enjoyed reading "Before Saying Yes to The Ring". Although I already said yes to my fiance it was refreshing to hear of her testimony and walk with Christ. I could definitely relate to a lot of the things she struggles with and her experiences with previous relationships and addictions. The book references scripture and constantly enforces that this is her journey. Sometimes authors can feel "pushy" but this was the complete opposite with Karolyne. She was honest, transparent, and came from a loving place. I think the book is perfect for someone courting/in a relationship/single and desiring a relationship. Regardless, I'm engaged and it was still a blessing to read. God bless!

Karolyne, writes such an inspirational story and becomes very, very transparent in this book. Many of her early life experiences relate so closely to mine....I am so happy she found love and most importantly, stopped comprimising herself and started to follow God's direction.

This book was an eye opener I purchased it because I am now in the engaged season of my life. We're in pre-marital counseling at our church and we have stood strong in our faith. I wanted to read something that fed the slight insecurity I felt about not being fully prepared. But after reading I have been able to connect all the lessons with the ones in the book and it has brought some ideals full circle. This is an honest and very expressive book and I'm thankful for the transparency that was shown in happy and frustrating times. A must read 4 stars from me.

EVERYTHING TO GAIN!!!

I was around 15 years living in India at that time with a -5.0 diopters prescription in both eyes in 1978. My father had bought this book from the store in India-an Indian reprint of the same book. I was wearing soft contact lenses at that time because it could prevent further progression of myopia and for cosmetic reasons because I was young. I have read the book from cover to cover and did whatever simple exercises I could like reading the book without glasses or bouncing a ball and focusing the movement. The hope in it became really real in 1980 when I was accompanied by my parents to one of the centers in Southern India's Aurobindo Ashram in Pondicherry which was propagating the Bates technique. There were people coming there year after year to have their techniques reinforced AND removing glasses. The center was accepting voluntary donations to run it. In the floor of that house they had all the things that were needed and mentioned in Dr. Bates book. One had to spend about 1.5 hours there to use everything that was in the facility with instructors to help. Since Pondicherry was a city on the beach, many people took their vacations to come there. My own experience: within merely four days, I could read the very last line on the Snellen chart which was a -2.5 diopter reduction. On returning I had to change my contact lenses to the decreased refraction. However, if one does not maintain the exercises, we go back to our old habits of reading faultily by habit and it goes back to where we started again. The benefits are usually immediate and then it is known to plateau before coming down again. The easiest way to incorporate the technique is to play tennis or ping pong without glasses which I have also done and then rest the eyes. One can also read without glasses if the book can be focused on using blinking and focusing one word at a time and without scanning. It most certainly works, so much so, that my parents had wanted to start these similar type centers in the USA, my mom and I at the least being medical doctors and my dad being naturalized in our environment. My father has since passed away. This book is least likely to cause further harm and uses principles of physics appropriately and $10 is a very small price to pay for eye health. I did NOT practice it thereafter and my faulty eye habits worsened my myopia again. At this time I have had LASIK and my vision is 20/20 from TLC. However, I wish to maintain eye health and incorporate proper techniques in my life yet again. I would also like to recommend to my friends who have similar problems and are not able to stabilize their myopia with a -0.25 increase every time they see the ophthalmologist. So on searching for this book I am so happy to find that it is still in print and available. My copy from India is treasured by me and has been with me through the years through a heavy academic load. It benefits to incorporate eye exercises as much as physical exercise in one's daily routine will be the long term solution. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!! AMAZING STORY! First time reader of Norma Jeannre Karlssons'` book and it was so much more than her blurh. This is something NEW, sure it has the alpha and the love story, the drama and the shoot em ups, but its the things I'm NOT gonna tell you about that should make you REALLY REALLY want to grab this story!

4 1/2 stars for this first book in what I hope will become another series from this terrific author. If you've read her Blackness series (which was awesome, by the way, and a must buy of you like this book) you know her type of Alpha males. Ones who don't show much emotion, (except to their women who they protect with their lives and are extremely devoted to) who don't take any s***, loyal to their family (whether it be by blood, or association) and who feel no remorse in doing what's necessary to protect what's theirs. In my opinion, this was light on the paranormal aspect. So if that is not your cup a tea, you should give it a try anyway. There should be enough though to satisfy fans of that genre, too. The H is hot, sexy, masculine, and take charge. He loves his woman and there is some hot sex. It is not every other page, however. She creates another world here, yet ties it back to her Blackness series by including Kiernan Delaney, a mob boss from Chicago. I can't wait for the next book in the Blackness series which is to feature one of the Cooper brothers (release date 2-14-15), I'll also be anxiously waiting to see the next book in this series to see what happens with Kane, Alannah, their son, and all the other characters that could have their own stories told. Type fast Ms. Karlsson, PLEASE!

I am utterly addicted to this author's Blackness series, so I was excited when I found this book. After reading the synopsis, I really wasn't sure I would like it. While I like some paranormal, it is not typically my first choice. However, since this book was free on kindle unlimited, I figured why not try it. I found myself hooked in quite quickly. It was nothing like I expected and not even remotely similar to anything I've ever read. The book was written from Kane's first person perspective. Typically, first person from a male point of view throws me off a bit, but this one didn't. I loved being inside his head.

The characters in this story were so well developed. I easily became attached to most all of them. I will be so disappointed if this doesn't turn into a series so I can catch up on how things turn out for each one. Kane was a bad man who ultimately became the only good in so many lives. Alannah was his perfect foil. She was hard enough to handle being in Kane's life but also softened his rough edges in his relationships with others.

So much crazy stuff happens in this story, but I really think it would spoil it to have too many details before experiencing it. I will just say that it is a total and complete emotional roller coaster in the most amazing way. If you have read the Blackness series and liked it, you will also love this. If you haven't, what are you waiting for?!?
