Great tips for exercising and improving concentration!

In the past week, I lost my cell phone three times. I burned my hand because I was trying to type while I poured coffee, and I texted, sent emails and watched cat videos during a webinar. So...I felt that I was a good candidate for reading this book. I'm so glad I did! The suggestions made by author Joanna Jast have already made a huge difference in my 'typical day'... for example, I logged my distractions for a few days and was able to see a pattern. When I observed my home and work environments, I was shocked by the number of times my attention wandered or was spread too thin. There were external issues, such as people interrupting me, the phone ringing when I was busy, etc, but the vast majority of my distractions were created by me. The good news is that if I created them, I can contain them. I've made a plan and set goals that I want to achieve through better focus. This book is full of insight and common sense and the suggestions are easy to follow. In short... it works!

A comprehensive, easy-to-read guide to improving your focus.

Joanna Jast, a trained doctor, has written a comprehensive, easy-to-read guide to improving your focus which can be easily understood by the layman.

Near the beginning there is a section entitled 'Your specific situation and how to diagnose problems in your system', so right away I was able to personalize the system.
There is a lot of practical advice, and reminders of tried and trusted methods (which the author states up front. Such as the 'Pomodoro' method and getting enough sleep!)
And there were a few 'surprises' in there: 'Why I Believe 'Getting Motivated' is Overrated' certainly got my attention, as did 'The Importance of Managing Energy, not Time.'

I found the final section on making a system for myself extremely helpful. As were the links to further reading and free downloads for the different exercises suggested.

This is a book which cannot fail to help as there is so much advice and information here, clearly laid out and well presented.

A great guide for a scatter brained person like me

I'm a creative and enthusiastic person but I can be very scatter brained at times. I want to be successful, but my mind goes in several different directions. I realize that focus is a key factor to success so I'm always looking for resources to help me develop and enhance my ability to focus.

Joanna hits the nail on the head and gives easy to follow practical advice on how to stay focused. It's more of a tactical book than an inspirational one, and sometimes we need less passion and more precision. There's no fluff in this book. It's not intended to make you feel all warm and fuzzy inside. This book is a guide with useful information that allows you to create a strategy for focusing that's built around your unique personality. She isn't simply giving her opinion, she uses information that's backed by research. The quality of her education and the breadth of her knowledge is clearly shown throughout the book.

I gleaned a ton of great insight from the book and I know that the strategies in it are going to help me immensely moving forward.

The key to success is focus. Read this book if you need the focus to reach your goals.

The lovely ladies of J.W. Waterhouse

A lovely book on J.W. Waterhouse, with many full page color photos with great background information about the artist and the Pre-Raphaelite movement. Most of his well known works are featured in this book along with some lesser known gems and a small sample of drawings. This is an excellent book.

Unsurpassed!

This book is a detailed chronicle of Waterhouse's life and many of his important works. The paintings are lavishly reproduced in large formats. It will satisfy the most demanding reader.
I loaned out this book from a library with the intention of scanning a few good pictures to learn from. I ended up marking up for scanning dozens of them that were too good to pass up. So I decide to purchase my own copy of the book instead.
If you are artistically oriented, this book will give you hours and hours of enjoyment, and if you spend time to read the text, which is well researched, well written and prodigiously informative, you will as soon become an authority of sorts on J. W. Waterhouse.

From Waterhouse's early works to his decline in popularity after World War 1 to his rediscovery, everything you wanted to know about his works and the man himself. Also his master works like Saint Cecilia, Hylas and the Nymphs and many others are presented in wonderful color to take your breath away. Great Text Edition, but Cheaply Produced Print-On-Demand Book - Shame on Oxford University Press!

Love's edition of the poetry of the Earl of Rochester is a classic and a model of textual criticism. But when one pays several hundred dollars for a book, one is also buying an object with certain expectations. And the expectations created by Oxford University Press (and parroted by Amazon) are false. This is not the "first edition," as Amazon claims, but a horrible print-on-demand piece of garbage. The book is not a cloth-bound hardcover, as is supposed to be, but a cheaply produced piece of plastic junk.

Oxford University Press consistently lies when it advertizes titles in the series "Oxford English Texts": by now, they're all print-on-demand volumes, bound in glossy plastic, with "perfect binding" (i.e., loose pages glued together), very low-quality paper, and a poor reproduction of the original typography (often worse than an old photocopy). The edges of the pages are usually stained with filthy ink remnants, as a result of the poorly & incompetently implemented print-on-demand process. It is a travesty that Oxford University Press is allowed to enjoy the benefits of a nonprofit organization: it sells these scholarly editions at a much higher price and with a much higher profit margin than any for-profit academic publisher, which is particularly offensive since the latter do pay taxes. Enough with the pretension. Shame on these Oxford UPr crooks.
