A drama dealing with the serious matter of dying with dignity. Brian Clark somewhat playfully shows us a character who is paralyzed
from the neck down. The comings and going of the hospital staff and the light banner (which ignores the elephant in the room)
which passes between the patient and the staff keep us off balance as to the miserable feelings of the patient as he lies
helpless waiting to die. But wanting to die is not enough. There are legal and ethical decisions to be made before the patient can go home to die as he wished. Clark shows us how the legal system works against the wished of the patient and how the doctor in charge
struggles to do everything he can to keep the patient in place although there is nothing medically he can do which will change the patient's mind. Finally we are faced with the ultimate question: "Is it morally right to sustain a painful life or to opt for an easy death when
the patient has no real life to live and wants to leave this earth" Clark handles these serious life-ending questions with a sensitivity
and even a sense of humor,but there is no doubt as to which side he is on.

A Jarring Thought Experiment

What is the value of a life and who should be able to make life-changing decisions in the case of a crisis? This question and it's implications become clear as glass in this short play. After I started reading, I couldn't stop until I was finished. While the conclusion may not be expected, it leaves a lot to think about.

whose life is it - the right freedom to choose is as relevant today as it was when this play first written- prefer the single habded version but couldnt get a copy of that anywhere.
