A good effort, but incomplete

I purchased this book with the hope it would assist me in identifying the names of four patterns of silver (all of them pieces I had inherited.) I knew the manufacturers of each piece and knew the approximate date of manufacture (ranging from 1895 to 1956); this book could only give me the names of two of them. Although Maryanne Dolan gives a lot of background about the great American silver companies and their histories, there is no index to refer to; I had to read through each company's "biography" to learn (finally!) that Wm. Rogers was brought by International Sterling.
For a silver enthusiast who is interested in researching many different patterns, this wouldn't be my first choice as a reference. Overall, though, it was informative.

Not the best.

I bought this book along with Sterling Flatware by Tere Hagan. I find it difficult to use and poorly organized. She has a lot of information on certian patterns and makers but little on others. There is no index and information is incomplete. I use it as a back up to Hagan's book as she sometimes will have a pattern that Hagen dosen't have. Neither book is complete and this book has some information and a couple of Manufactures that Hagan dosen't cover still both books are valuable but even together not complete. I still have quite a few unknowns in my collection.

This book is more like a short pamphlet. It typically gives nothing more than 1 (!?!) short sentence in answer to each question, without explaining the J2EE technologies in any detail whatsoever. I skimmed through it in just a few minutes. It is so lacking, I wonder if I am missing something. In my opinion, it is not worth the $9.99 I paid for it... $0.99 is probably more appropriate. I want to be fair and give the author the benefit-of-the-doubt, but I feel the author just wrote this to make a quick buck. I don't much like writing negative reviews, so sorry ... please forgive. Don't say I didn't warn you, though.

Henrik Vejlgaard, M.a.,M.sc., is a pioneer in trend sociology, the study of the trend process. Combining a background of social science and communication, he consults with a wide cross section of companies and industries on the topics of innovation and product development. He has lectured on lifestyle and trend sociology at the University of Copenhagen and the University of Arhus School of Business, both in Denmark. About the Author

Catherine LaBerta is a Full Professor in the Computer Science/Mathematics Department at Erie Community College in Buffalo, NY.  She is also an adjunct professor at SUNY-Buffalo.  Catherine teaches courses that range from Intro to Computers to Programming in C++ to Web Development.  Originally a math major, Catherine took additional courses in computers and programming and found a field that clicked for her.  She enjoys the constant changes in the computer and related fields as it forces one to keep up and constantly learn.  Not a total book worm, she loves skiing in Purgatory, CO, one of her favorite spots. She also enjoys boating—especially schooner trips off the coast of Maine— and will always be working on that golf game.

Book is too overwhelming for starters, MyITLab is a joke

I am a computer professional with over 15 years of experience, and I have reviewed this book for a college class...Catherine goes into detail from the specifics of how a computer works to how technology affects your daily life. Which is a good start for someone who's taking an introductory class that has no experience in computer or whatsoever. However, I feel like she tends to write too much to get to a specific point. I should note that the "bold-ed vocabulary" on each chapter is ridiculously too much. In my opinion, this book CAN be overwhelming for students.

I would rate 3/5 - 2.5/5 stars for the book.

I rated one star on Amazon NOT on the basis of the book, however on the basis of the supplied MyITLab on it. For those don't know, MyITLab is Pearson Education's online module for you to submit assignments...read e-books...and finally testing on book materials.

Now I don't know who made this website, but MyITLab ONLY supports Internet Explorer, which is a pretty disappointing factor. The registration code I was supplied did not enable me to access the e-book despite that I have the physical copy. (Most online modules let you have an e-book and a physical version).

The most important point though, is the automated markings conducted by the online module. Most multiple choice questions (randomly generated from a data bank) have either 2 answers to it or no answers to it at all. They basically force you to choose one and bet your marks against it. I don't know who came up with these, but you can't be serious! I did the multiple choices myself and could only get 70-80%, and I was told the class average was around 50% or below. 70% students were pretty rare. Some questions had confusing wording and I couldn't even understand what the question had asked.

If any instructors want to use this book, go ahead, but PLEASE, do NOT use MyITLab as a source of assignment submission and testing. Create your own questions based on topics in the book.

College students!!!! BEWARE!!!!!

If you do not buy this book at your local campus book store, you will not get the course ID for MYITLab, where you will more than likely suffer the terrible horrors MYITlab. If you do not know what MYITLab is, you are the lucky one, if you are taking a "hybrid/online" class that uses MYITLab. i suggest not and save yourself. And there is a code to sign up onto this myitlab, if you buy this used you do not get the code and must pay 80$ to obtain it. Again i, a college student, do not recommend this. The course of action i do recommend is gather your fellow classmates and write angry letters to your teachers about how much myitlab sucks.

Good book for the introductory computer class

Fourteen chapters, 11th edition, covering everything from input output storage to enterprise computing.
I like the layout of the chapters, the exercises in the end of the chapters. The team projects are
really informative.

The only piece missing is people in the business, such as Steve Jobs, Mark Zuckerberg, etc.

I recommend this book to all professors and students.

A tour de force first-person account of the life of Samuel L. Gravely, Jr.

"Trailblazer, The U.S. Navy's First Black Admiral", is a tour de force first-person account of the life of Samuel L. Gravely, Jr. In his youth, he learned well the lessons of Jim Crow in his home-town of Richmond, Virginia. In spite of the various obstacles placed in his path by a narrow-minded society, he went on to become one of the first African Americans to be commissioned as an officer and, ultimately, as the very first African American officer to attain flag rank in the U.S. Navy.

Admiral Gravely tells his story with the help of Paul Stillwell, who is a Navy veteran, editor and author of "The Golden Thirteen: Recollections of the First Black Naval Officers." In the Trailblazer book, we see through Admiral Gravely's eyes and in his voice how he climbed the ladder in the Navy to become the first African American to command a ship, the first to command a fleet, and the first to become an admiral in 1971. His ground-breaking achievements were a tribute to his deeply ingrained strength of character, fiercely dedicated temperament, and dogged perseverance.

Trailblazer also details the personal legacy of Admiral Gravely, the husband and family man, as seen through the eyes of his devoted and loving wife, Alma, including their whirlwind courtship, which lead to their marriage in 1946 - a rich and full union that lasted 58 years - to the death of their beloved older son Robbie in 1978, and finally to Alma's making peace with the certainty of his impending death.

"Sammie," as Alma affectionately referred to the Admiral, very wisely drew from a diverse pool of experiences, as well as from leadership examples provided by his fellow officers, in modeling his own command style during his impressive naval service career. He became THE role model to emulate and set a fine example for thousands of African American naval officers who came after him.

Admiral Gravely poignantly describes one of the more distasteful aspects that made an excruciatingly painful and enduring impression on him during his first duty posting, after his graduation from midshipman school in December 1941. He had returned to Camp Robert Smalls, where he had started his naval service two years earlier, only to find that he was still living in a very clearly segregated world. The naval training station at Great Lakes had quarters for white officers, but not for him. The officer's club was open to white officers, but not to him. To add insult to injury, after he pulled daily watches encompassing the whole camp, he had to return to the distinctly separate "Black camp" each night to sleep. Gravely, regarding this blatant disparity in the service ranks (and society as a whole) as a formidable obstacle, noted, "This was one of the hardest things for me to take of anything that happened to me during my Navy career."

Admiral Gravely always relished and welcomed any and every opportunity for additional training, personal enrichment, and overall challenge of being a part of something new. Continuous educational growth formed the bulwark of his life's mantra. He never knew what he would encounter in the next stage of his life, but he knew for certain what he was leaving behind.
He just wanted to be "a regular sailor."

Samuel L. Gravely was "a regular sailor" ... and then some! As Rear Admiral Barry C. Black, USN (Ret.) said in his advanced praise of the book, "Vice Admiral Samuel L. Gravely, Jr. blazed a trail of courage, hospitality, humility, excellence, faithfulness, and patriotism. His pioneering accomplishments opened doors of opportunity for thousands, enabling me to become the Chief of Navy Chaplains and the 62nd Chaplain of the Unites States Senate. I stand on his strong shoulders."

Trailblazer is an inspiring story about an exceptionally unique barrier-breaking and visionary gentleman, Vice Admiral Samuel L. Gravely, Jr., USN. It is a very humbling regular sailor's account of triumph and growth in the face of adversity and of his awe inspiring legacy to our Nation and our U.S. Navy.

One certainly need not be a fan or student of the military realm to appreciate the dedication and drive of this remarkable man, who overcame, with great courage, grace, and poise, every challenge he faced as the Trailblazer.
