king for a day

This is an enjoyable book of a neglected strip artist - Otto Soglow. His art is as unique as any comic strip artist and is the strip itself is unlike any other. It must be taken in small doses and this book fills the bill. Beautiful printing on great stock.

Besides the Monarch himself is the complete run of The Ambassador, almost a Little King clone. My one disappointment is the short shift of Sentinel Louie, the topper in the Sundays. There are about nine or ten pages of him.

A great book about a very neglected genius and a perfect partner for the wonderful new Nancy book. Now, can't we have the most neglected strip of all time, Clifford McBride's Napoleon and Uncle Elby, possibly the best dog strip of the 20th century.

Little King Still Lives Big!

Otto Soglow's deceptively simple Sunday strip THE LITTLE KING
has been given the deluxe IDW treatment - and it's wonderful!
Our rotund royal delights on just about every page, with panels
that are artistic gems - whether LK is trying to sneak out of
the palace just to have some fun; or to free himself from the stodgy
routine which is his particular bane. I wasn't aware that
Soglow, a contributor to THE NEW YORKER, used his creation in that magazine's pages. IDW
provides a brief essay on his artistic endeavors - some of which are
rather surprising - along with examples of the Little King's
predecessor strip, THE AMBASSADOR. A hefty volume, nicely produced.
If you are into "different" newspaper strip art, this is for you.

Render unto the King

It's about time that Otto Soglow and his Little King finally got their due. Universally admired for his economy of line and elegant flowing style, Soglow's art is a treat that should have this book on any cartooning fan's wish list.

We couldn't ask for more in this collection. There are more Little King strips in here than you can shake a stick at, so many in fact that we really get to know Soglow's tricks for putting together pantomime gags. Pantomime is the toughest act to pull off in comics, and to get inside Soglow's mind to this extent is an enlightening treat. What is also wonderful is that the strips are chosen from a complete cross-section of the strip's long lifespan. Oddly enough, I found the latest material (1975) to be perhaps the most fascinating. By this time Soglow's aging mind seemed to be a little off, and the strips become downright Dali-esque. The surreal element was probably unintentional, but it is quite unsettling work, especially when tackled right after perusing the earlier more lighthearted strips.

In addition to The Little King, we also get a good sampling of The Ambassador, Soglow's 1933-34 stand-in while King Features was waiting for the rights to use The Little King, originally held by The New Yorker. We also get some Sentinel Louie topper strips. An excellent biographical essay by Jared Gardner includes rare early Soglow work, including material in different styles that you would never guess to be Soglow's. The only thing I missed was a sampling of Soglow's short-lived Travelin' Gus strip, but that has been reprinted in Hogan's Alley magazine, so I guess they felt that strip had already gotten its due.

Most of the Little King strips are reproduced in black and white, but there is a color section of nearly a hundred pages. That gives you plenty of the flavor of the feature as it was seen in Sunday papers. Because of Soglow's incredible linework, the switch to black and white for the majority of the book is perfectly fine, as it allows us to bask in Soglow's work without chromatic distractions.

It hardly needs to be mentioned of an IDW/Dean Mullaney production, but the restoration of the strips, and the quality of the presentation, is utterly superb. Thanks to IDW for another great collection!

Spider-Man’s uncle once said, “With great power comes great responsibility,” but what the great philosopher really meant was, “With great power comes a never-ending string of dumbass questions.” In the year since selflessly bestowing The Bro Code upon humanity I have been inundated with letters, emails, texts—even a few stalker-level break-ins—from people in every corner of the globe, but mostly France.

Everyone wants to know three things:

Why haven’t you been nominated for a Nobel Prize?

How can one person be so handsome, smart, popular, and handsome? (The “one person” I’m referring to is you—Barney Stinson.)

The Bro Code is immensely entertaining, educational, and available via Fireside Books/Simon & Schuster, but it offers only general guidelines about how to live my life. What do I do when I’m at the office, going to the beach, or when I’m supposed to be at the office but I’m at the beach? HELP!

Yet again, Barney Stinson strikes gold.

After purchasing the Bro Code, the Bible of Bro-dom, if you will, I decided I could not be without Bro on the Go. Upon receiving my package, I tore it open and immediately read the whole thing. It's not long, no, but the wisdom contained within its meek blue cover is second only to that within the Bro Code itself.

There are a few original Bro Codes, usually one at the beginning of every chapter, but the majority of this book consists of fresh nuggets of wisdom regarding various situations a Bro may or may not find himself in, with titles such as "Bro at the Beach" or "Bro in Outer Space", and various other everyday situations.

This is a book any Bro should own. No exceptions.

Not worth the money, just buy the full Bro Code book.

If you want to read the Bro Code go straight to the regular book. This one is more like a condensed version but really, the bro code can be read in less than 2 hours! Who needs a condensed version of that? If you don't believe me just look for "Barney reads the Bro Code" on YouTube and you'll find him reading the whole book (original, not this version) in less than 2 hours.

I am a big fan of the show and one day I came across this. It was under 4 dollars so i figured what could it hurt. Open up to the first bro code and busted out laughing. It is a very short read. 125 pgs. 1 bro code/ joke per page. I keep it on the coffee table for company to get some laughs in but if you really take this with you it is bigger than your wallet. Just saying. Plus short enought to memorize the good onea

Its OK

I was not thrilled with this story, Its well written in many ways but I was not happy with the female nor the male Character. No Spoilers but she is a push over that if her chosen career is supposed to be true it does not fit. He comes across as a dick and a douche. I read this all the way through and have read biker stories in the past and this one falls flat in my opinion.

A well-written, clean romance that concludes well but, is a camouflaged cliffhanger-style story.

I rated this a 4-star because I enjoyed the tone and flow of the story, liked the characters and, I very much appreciated that there were no graphic descriptions of violence or sex nor vulgar language (especially for a MC story).
The reason that I didn't rate this a 5-star is because, while this story has a conclusive ending, it's actually a continuing story (or, camouflaged cliffhanger). Which means, I may never discover how things play out on the path to the happily-ever-after because I don't chase after unfinished tales.
Because I did enjoy the story, I'd recommend it.

Really great story.

Two friends, that are also neighbors , come back from war and go to the police academy. One drops out two weeks before finals and graduation. The other graduates and joins the police task force. Two years later one is an Iron Tornadoes M C member and the other us dead.
The story has just the right amount of mystery suspense and love to keep you interested..

As easy as it claims

This book is great with its workbook format. It really did make it easy to learn the style of calligraphy it teaches. Its format makes it so simple that all you need is a calligraphy marker or pen. The rest is all in the book, from how to instructions, to tracing pages, to practicing, and to decorative projects. I really enjoyed it and also gave a copy to a 10 year old who equally enjoyed it.

I have this workbook and I feel that the content needs to be updated. I photocopy the exercise pages and others but I would prefer a different workbook for Calligraphers. I don't use carpenters pencils...but my Sheafer Fountain Callgraphy pen broad nib works with this book. I think for what I paid for it that I could have gotten a better deal elsewhere.

Good for all Beginners

This is a must have for beginners no matter what age. I photo copied the more complicated letters/symbols some so I could work on them a bit more. You will not be discouraged using this book to start you off with. Purchase Margaret Shepherd's other books for calligraphy, she is a fine teacher of lettering of all types.

Not sure why someone thought it would be a good idea to make it a paper back

This is a very large and thick text book. Not sure why someone thought it would be a good idea to make it a paper back. I've paid allot of money for my medical text books and enjoy keeping them for future reference. I wish this one had a hard cover instead of a flimsy paper one. This one has been slid in and out of my backpack just a few times and is already showing wear and tear.
