A must for all who are studying for the CXC CAPE History

A textbook for CAPE Unit 2 History by Carol Mae Morrissey, is a timely book which, in spite of its daunting title, is both Teacher and student friendly. In this book the Author has given us a factual account of some of the major events that have shaped global history between the 15th and 20th centuries: European Rivalries in the Caribbean; the capture and enslavement of West Africans; the British Industrial Revolution and the ideology of the Enlightenment era.
Additionally, her account of the events that sparked the American and French Revolutions unveil the challenges that were encountered by men who dared to reject the status quo by thinking and reasoning for themselves. The last two chapters focus on issues at the core of the First World War, and events in the post WWI era which facilitated the rise of Adolf Hitler and Nazism, and culminated with the Second World War. This textbook also has a comprehensive set of primary documents related to various chapters in the book to facilitate document analysis.
Embedded with pictures to solidify the information in the text, the Author’s writing style will undoubtedly inspire students to want to learn more about key characters and events in global history. Moreover, this book makes it easy for the Teacher of History who just has to start with the opening lines of Chapter 7 on the First World War to captivate the interests of the students.
Rivalries, Revolutions, Racism is therefore a MUST for all who are studying for the CXC CAPE Unit 2 History examination because events are portrayed in a fashion that is easy to read and understand. Excellent aqeeda (belief system) book vol 1

For anyone muslim who bought this with the intention of learning his releigion I can only say that from what Ive read in the first volume, the aqeeda (belief system) is on point. However, I researched further into Sheikh Ashqar and it seems he had some ties with Ikhwaan Muslimeen in Egypt. For anyone looking to attach themselves to the Salafi Dawah this causes a problem because all of the modern day scholars have spoken out against Ikhwaan Muslimeen because they promote tebelling against the ruler and are proponents of Sayd Qutb, who is also another person spoke. Out against due to his straying from the path of the Sunnah. So be on guard if you choose to read this series. It is written very well and the Sheikh brings a softer, deeper writing style than some of the other creed books out there that sometimes come across too much like a text book. If I had to recommend a book on creed and belief I would recommend Foundations of the Sunnah by Ahmed ibn Hanbal and published by Salafi Publications for a concise to the point understanding of belief and creed of one of the 4 Great Imaams.

About the Author
David Redish is a professor of Neuroscience at the University of Minnesota. Trained in
computational, theoretical, and experimental neuroscience, he has contributed to our
understanding of decision-making and cognition. Dr. Redish received a dual-degree BA
in the writing seminars (poetry, plays) and computer science from The Johns Hopkins
University, and his PhD in computer science from Carnegie Mellon University.

A Book that gets into your Brain

When beginning a “popular press” book on the topic of neuroscience one cannot be sure what they are getting themselves into. Just the idea of reading a book about the subject can scare some. Three pages into Dr. David Radish’s new book The Mind within the Brain, I was delighted with my book choice. Radish is a neuroscientist, at the University of Minnesota, who researches the contribution of learning and memory to behavior. He has authored other works like Beyond the Cognitive Map and has a background in writing, computer science and neuroscience. Dr. Radish’s new book concisely addresses the mysterious topic of free will. Because of his diverse background, the author is able to provide unique insight into how humans make decisions.

The main text of the book is kept brief, to the point and entertaining but the footnotes and appendixes include additional stories by Redish explaining in depth neuroscience concepts. Average readers interested in the topic can therefore enjoy the book while someone who wants to expand their knowledge can take advantage of the meticulous science. The book is broken up into 4 sections: “decisions and the brain”, “decision making systems”, “brain with a mind of its own” and “the human condition.” After each section additional peer reviewed articles are cited so that if you find something interesting, you can get more in depth information on the topic.
The first section begins with Redish’s basic definition of a decision: “the selection of actions.” The brain is compared to a complex decision-making machine based on negative feedback. He writes about how this machine’s choices are based on values determined by multiple interacting systems including reflexive, pavalonian, deliberative, and habit based. The second part of the book provides an overview of these systems. . The reflexive system is the simplest system because it is hardwired into our body and can react in milliseconds to a danger or event. The pavalonian system includes prewired responses to stimuli that have been learned over evolution. You can learn what predicts the outcome but cannot change it. The deliberative system is one that involves one-time selections. This system is most associated with being human; it is very flexible and involves planning and deliberation, but requires more time then the others. Finally, the habit-based system is simple but inflexible once created. It determines the best actions to take based on past experiences and memories. Once an association arises this system can recognize a situation again and act quickly with the learned response. In addition to these four systems other components are needed: a physical action system, which can physically take the action that’s been chosen, a perceptual system that can recognize objects around us, a situational recognition system that can categorize stimuli into situations, a motivational system that identifies what we want and what we are willing to do for it. Together these sub systems offer the support for the decision-making mechanisms to work.

Redish begins the third section of the book by proposing that the mind and brain are the same thing but that the components process information differently leading to vulnerabilities in the decision making system. He terms these vulnerabilities as “failure points.” A thermostat is used as an example to represent something that can determine what needs to happen and then be initiated. Just like a thermostat our decision making complex can malfunction, and show a version of reality that may be inaccurate. Addiction, gambling issues, and post-traumatic stress disorder are all malfunctions. The final section of the book explores what makes us human, including the topics of morality and free will. Free will is looked at again in the last chapter as Redish discusses the wild area of advanced robotics where the robots can think for themselves.

Redish has hit a homerun with The Mind within the Brain. The book is well organized and has a nice flow that makes it easy to read. It is definitely a plus that the author has background in writing because it can be hard to simplify difficult concepts into words that non-PhD’s can understand. His use of humor and personal stories keeps the reader entertained in a subject matter that could be dry. He begins each chapter with a paragraph or two that gets you interested in the topic by showing everyday examples of what is about to be discussed. During each chapter, complex explanations are always given real life comparisons. For example, the “decision making machine” is discussed in relation to a Toyota Prius because each have many parts and just like the brain they are all trying to accomplish the same goal. These analogies really help the reader gain a better understanding of the topic.

I chose this book because I was intrigued by how the brain makes decisions; I have always wondered why I do certain things. I was able to obtain all of the answers that I wanted on human decision making. Anyone who has ever been curious about a decision or the process in the brain that led to it would find answers here! Very powerful. 5 stars for Redish, 5 stars for The Mind within the Brain.

Don't speculate. Read this book!

Synthesizing several different lines of research and development relevant to the mind and behavior, David Redish presents a vastly more complex and powerful model than anything else I have encountered. In particular, no one who has not read this book should ever be allowed to speculate on "free will" again.

The history of 388th Bombardment Group's service is told in great detail by Price, who has actively sought out each member of the Group, together with surviving family members, in an effort to glean more information about their war and to reunite them with the trophy that they won in the midst of it. Excellent Step-By-Step Calculations for the Mundane

This is a necessary text for all engineers. Such textbooks are highly useful in establishing standards for mundane calculations performed in many branches of engineering. I just recently replaced my first edition of this book with the newest so that I would have access to the new enviromental engineer calculations added.

The book is now divided into civil, mechanical, architectural, and chemical engineering. If you can't find what you need, the safest bet is to check out the mechanical section next. In my opinion, the mechanical section is far too large and it is time to abandon the division of this book by degrees. I would divide it up by task; this would require simplifying the table of contents and an expansion of the index but then who really uses a TOC with a handbook?

Why do I use the word mundane? You won't find complicated calculation procedures here, nor will you find a lot of selection criteria information. What I mean is a table ranking technology. A good example of this is the series of books by Coulson and Richardson on chemical engineering. In that series, under drying, for example, all the technology is ranked according to product dryness, particle sizes, etc.. None of this is presented here. What makes this book useful is that is presents a procedure understandable to junior engineers and clients for solving a particular problem such as calculating a slab thickness or the size of a ventilation duct.

This book is a must-have if you are a consultant, contractor, or just want an understanding of a basic engineering calculation.

Mr. Hicks' approach to sizing pipe for compressed air

Mr. Hicks has done a wonderful job in compling equations, however, he has missed the practical applications in compressed air and vacuum systems. I initially used his theoritcal position on calculating pressure drop in pipe for compressed air. His position seems reasonable and logical until you compare the results with practical applications. Ingresoll-Rand, the air compressor manufacturer, published tables of pressure drop verses pipe sizes, delivery pressures and ACFM. Futher ASPE has published a data book which leads the engineer into an empirical equation for calculating pressure loss in compressed air piping. The results with both Ingresoll-Rand and ASPE agree. Using Mr. Hicks' therotical approach drives the pipe size much larger than needed and therefore the cost of the project. My suggestion is that Mr. Hicks contact I-R and ASPE to incorporate their empirical approach to sizing pipe for compressed air and vacuum systems.

I respectfully submit, that you need to appreciate Mr. Hicks' position. He has provided a conservative approach that will work in almost every situation. The empirical approach that you advocate may well work in most situations but I'll bet there is little margin built in for contingencies. True, your solution may cost less, which is important. But will the low-margin, low cost solution still work 1 or 2 years from now or will the pipe size be too small to allow for degradation/changes? Customer repeat business must be a consideration, too.
I'm not trying to be confrontational, and I understand what you're saying. But you have to appreciate the position that Mr. Hicks must take in such a handbook, and he takes the only logical one, which is to be on the conservative side. People doing more than a couple of these calculations in a year in fact should consult more in-depth material, as you did.
