About the Author
Garth Saloner is the Jeffrey S. Skoll Professor of Electronic Commerce, Strategic Management and Economics at the Graduate School of Business at Stanford University where he has headed the Strategic Management group since 1990. He has taught strategic management, competitive strategy and e-commerce courses for MBAs and in executive education. He served as Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and Director of Research and Curriculum Development from 1993-1996. He has served as a Co-Editor of the Rand Journal of Economics and on the editorial boards of the Strategic Management Journal, the International Journal of Industrial Organization, and Economics of Innovation and New Technology. He has also served as a member of the Steering Committee of the National Bureau of Economic Research Program in Industrial Organization and is a Research Associate in that program. Professor Saloner has a Ph.D. in Economics, Business, and Public Policy from Stanford.

Andrea Shepard is an Associate Professor of Strategic Management and Economics at the Graduate School of Business at Stanford University. Professor Shepard has taught strategic management, technology strategy and competitive strategy courses for MBA's and in executive education. She has served as a Co-Editor of the Journal of Industrial Economics, the Journal of Economics and Management, and as an Associate Editor for Business Policy at Management Science. She is a Research Associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research and has served on the Program Committee for the Econometric Society. Prior to joining Stanford's GSB, she was a member of the Economics Department faculty at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Professor Shepard has a Ph.D. in Economics from Yale University.

Joel Podolny is the William R. Timken Professor of Organizational Behavior and Strategic Management at the Graduate School of Business at Stanford University. He has taught MBA, executive, and Ph.D. courses in the areas of organizational behavior, organizational design, strategy, and global management. He is currently the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs. He served as consulting editor for the American Journal of Sociology. His articles have appeared in the Strategic Management Journal, Administrative Science Quarterly, American Journal of Sociology, and American Sociological Review. Professor Podolny has a Ph.D. in Sociology from Harvard University.

Outstanding strategy book for general managers

As a practicing general manager, I found this book to be one of the most useful I have read on the subject of strategic management. The text is clearly written and illustrated with numerous current examples. Unlike many other books on strategy, this one does an excellent job of integrating internal organizational issues with considerations of market competition. Most importantly for me, perhaps, is that the treatment of how strategy is actually carried out in large organizations rings true, giving me a high level of comfort with the relevance of the material. The book gave me numerous strategic insights and left me with a much improved integrated framework of strategy. I highly recommend it to any general manager wishing to improve his strategic thinking.

excellent text, though lots of room for improvement

I am an MBA student at MIT. We use this textbook in our Strategy course.

My opinion is that this textbook is very valuable. I have ready it very carefully, and it has had a tremendous impact on the way that I approach strategic issues. However, the book is poorly organized and the writing is opaque at times. This means that the benefits of the book become apparent only after careful and repeated readings.

The most important content of the book consists of the frameworks it provides. But these frameworks are not consistently labeled, numbered, or organized -- so the reader has to go to get great effort to pull them out and categorize them. Once found and understood, these frameworks are very valuable. I hope that future editions of the book will do a better job of explicitly enumerating and organizing these frameworks.

In summary, if you are willing to put in the time to carefully read and digest this book, it is highly valuable. But a superficial reading will be of little benefit.

As a final note, this textbook is much enhanced if it is read in conjunction with the many business school cases it references (such as EMI and CT scanners, or Disney and diversified acquisitions). The book itself provides only a few examples.

The Best Strategic Management Book I Have Read

This is a book on strategic management written by three leading scholars at the Stanford Business School. I was therefore not surprised that the book has the latest academic concepts, nor that there are many current examples drawn from high-tech and electronic commerce. What did surprise me is how relevant the concepts are to my own company and industry which is a manufacturing firm in a fairly old-fashioned industry, and how balanced the examples are between the "old economy" and "new economy".
This is definitely a thinking person's book. You can get a lot out of it by going through it once fairly superficially. But what I like is that I keep get more out of it when I go back to any chapter and read it more carefully. The authors have simplified but clearly a lot of thought has gone into each paragraph so that if you read it with care you pick up the nuances.
The book balances consideration of factors internal to the firm (with a very nice treatment of what the authors call "ARC" - architecture, routines, and culture) and external factors. There is also a good, practical treatment of how strategy should be done, written by people who obviously have seen the process at work.

Old Testament Narrative: A Guide to Interpretation

This is a great book for learning the basics of Old Testament narrative. The story questions at the end of the chapters are great for digging into a particular story and really applying the principles taught in the book. Learning isn't just reading, its reading and then doing it. This book gives you both.

About the Author
Rachel Meyer is a language school owner, Mandarin teacher, textbook author and former Chinese television actress. She is an enthusiastic language learner with fluency in Mandarin, Spanish and French. She spends her days running her language schools in New York, San Francisco and Menlo Park, teaching Chinese and Spanish, and organizing her popular language groups in San Francisco.  Her schools have been recognized by New York Magazine and The San Francisco Chronicle as "Best of New York" and "Best of the Bay Area", respectively.  Her life-long love of learning Mandarin inspired her to write Chit-Chat Chinese (Mandarin textbook and workbook) and encapsulates her approach to teaching and learning Mandarin.

Outstanding, finally someone gets it right.

For several years I have been becoming more sceptical about all the acclaimed wonders of Mandarin grammar books available through online sellers. The acquisition of this book totals 38 books I now have on the nebulous topic of "Chinese" language. This book is a reflection of the toils of a learner who somehow put it all together to acquire fluency. Whereas many Chinese born authors write a rehash of the troubled education system in their home country, Rachel Meyer from America nails it in her first book.

There are many things that many authors do not consider when writing. Readability is the most overlooked. The author makes great use of complementing colours and large readable fonts. Anyone who has read "Chinese through Tone and Colour" knows the headache of poor layout. There is generous spacing, no clustering and it is easy to relax and read without strain.

Content of course makes the book. This book is a systematic and gradual progression of the most useful characters compiling the most useful grammatical constructions. Characters are introduced with pronunciation, Hanyu Pinyin, meaning and then simple useful sentences. There is no searching all over the book to chase the components of each character. Repetition is gently integrated without the psychosis of Pimsleur. The integration of pronouns, verbs, proper nouns, adverbs, and nouns is so well balanced that useful sentences compile at a comforting rate.

The author effectively inserts anecdotes, cultural points, idioms and humour.

As an author, I know that indexes can take as long to write as the book. Rachel Meyer indexes English-Pinyin-character and Pinyin-English-character. This makes the utility of the book so much more useful and creates a dictionary of all terms and character in the book.

Every facet of what you need is in this book, text book, definitions, work book, dictionary, cultural tips, it is simply awesome.

As this book is "Level 1", I hope "Level 2" is in the works.

Language books are grossly over represented in used book stores and garage sales, this is not a reflection of people's lack of interest in learning languages but a reflection of horrid writing and good marketing. I highly recommend this book for both the beginner and the student who wants to consolidate their independent learning or their poorly taught course work.

Terrific book for introductory Chinese

I was a Chinese minor in college. The only thing I remember now thirty years later is that the textbooks from that era were really, really bad. I am now studying Chinese in an evening class, and we use Chit-Chat Chinese as a textbook. Wow! What a difference. Chit-Chat Chinese is about the most nearly perfect introductory textbook for a foreign language that I have ever seen. It's heavily oriented toward Americans who wish to learn Chinese: its sample sentences contains cartoons of George Clooney, Paris Hilton, Britney Spears, and even Mini Me ("Mini Me ai bu ai," or "Is Mini Me short?") Very splashy and fun, but also very thorough on Chinese phonology and grammar, and all written from the perspective of someone who struggled to learn Chinese and is now freely sharing the tricks, shortcuts, and explanations that make the most sense to English-speaking people. Even comes with a CD. I can't recommend this book highly enough. Xiexie, Rachel Meyer!

Disappointed

This book has great audio resources, but seems a bit rushed and unfinished. The English segments are well edited but my teacher frequently would have us correct the Chinese segments. The website has all of the audio elements uploaded but the website pretty much ends there with lots of "coming soon" messages from 2013. Each lesson begins with a section on Pinyin pronunciation, but many of the key sound differences were introduced way too late, in my opinion (for example the difference between qi and chi, or qu and chu.) It's a decent resource for an evening class but wouldn't stand up to collegiate or even high school level requirements, especially considering that there is no intermediate level available.

I would like to see the website updated with vocabulary lists.

After being introduced to Michelle Milo in earlier books in the Seductive Nights series, I was anticipating her move to protagonist in Nights with Him because I was interested to see what man would be a perfect match for the buttoned up, seemingly reserved psychologist who spent a decade silently pining for her best friend. By no means was I expecting a dirty-talking Alpha male who makes a living producing and distributing adult toys. Imagine my surprise when Michelle was revealed to have an unabashedly sensual side, reveling in Jack Sullivan’s innuendo-laden banter and take-charge attitude. Lauren Blakely spins Jack and Michelle's relationship into the ultimate fantasy, giving Nights with Him the distinction of being her steamiest, naughtiest, and most sexually adventurous book to date.

Knowing what type of erotic scenes Lauren Blakely has previously conceived with convenient props such as a string of pearls or a necktie, I had high expectations as to how much hotter each romantic encounter could get when the author is given free reign with a sex toy mogul hero who's not afraid to enlist battery-operated help in the bedroom. What I love about this series and about Nights with Him in particular, is that Jack and Michelle’s characters are thoroughly fleshed out in all aspects of their lives, giving the narrative a deeper substance beyond the romance between them. We are given an intimate look at Michelle and Jack’s relationship, which may have started as an attempt to satiate their basic physical needs, but evolved into an emotionally-charged affair that laid bare their innermost hopes and weaknesses. With its unbelievably steamy love scenes, the intense connection between the books’ protagonists, and a touch of drama for added suspense, Nights with Him is a perfect extension of the Seductive Nights series while also standing apart in its own. As much as I enjoyed Clay and Julia’s extended road to Happily Ever After in prior books in the series, I relished the fact that I knew exactly where Jack and Michelle stood by the end of the story.

Excellent characters and story! Super HOT!

I loved this story so much! Jack and Michelle are amazing together!

I was hooked from the beginning. Jack and Michelle are just these great, real characters and I could feel their vulnerability and connection. I love Michelle, she's such a strong character trying to move forward from past heartache. I love that she's cautious yet open and adventurous. I could see her barriers breaking down and I really enjoyed that throughout the story. Jack. Oh my Jack! Every detail that was learned made me feel for him and like him even more. Him trying to open up and battling himself was heartbreaking and when he finally gets there, my heart pretty much exploded. Chapter 23 had me more in love with this man than I already was.

I loved everything about Jack and Michelle being together. They were fun and playful and had this easy, flirty banter with one another. The openness they shared on a sexual level was pretty fantastic and when they started to open their hearts, it was romantic, sexy, and sweet all rolled into one.

There are LOTS of sexy times in this book… from my notes: "Holy hell doesn’t even cover the level of hotness in this. I seriously think it’s the hottest thing I’ve EVER read (and I read a lot!). I mean, there are these awesome sex scenes but the level of passion and eroticism intertwined with everything and their connection and vulnerability just takes it to a whole new level."

Loved the character connections and the new people that were introduced. Jack’s sister Casey is awesome and enjoyed her interactions with Jack’s friend Nate and can’t wait to see what Lauren Blakely does with that.

Great pacing, well thought out and well developed. And the end, I was all teary eyed and happy. Beautiful ending!

This was just a wonderful story and a fantastic addition to the series. Dare I say I like Jack is my new favorite! I'm just all kinds of happy!!!!!!

Lauren Blakely's books have been an automatic read for me and this series is my favorite by far. This story stars Jack, the sexy ex. soldier turned sex toy company ceo. He is NY's most eligable bachelor and darling of the media after his fiance dies a year earlier. We have Michelle Milo's story from previous books in the series getting her chance at love. She is a rock star therapist and is extremely talented in helping her clients navigate their relationships and lives. They become the focus of social media which is a problem for a therapist who requires discretion. It is hard for them to stay away from each other because they each awaken strong passion, desire and healing in the other. I fell in love with Jack and Michelle, and the development of both of their characters. I also loved how hot the chemistry is between them along with their dirty talking. Their love scenes and passion is off the charts! We get to see old friends and great new secondary characters along with some drama and mystery that keeps the story flowing. We are also treated to wonderful scenes in Paris that makes you feel like you are really there. This is another fabulous installment from Ms. Blakely and I can't wait for more from her about these people that I have grown to care about.

I burned through this LONG bundle in less than a day. Just couldn't stop reading! Each story was self-contained but very good. They were tied together thematically with the idea of dominating women which I enjoyed a lot. I think my favorite was “Stephanie's Ride” or the “Love Potion.” But I enjoyed my time with each story. I'll be picking up more for sure!

I had read all of these before except for the “Billionaire's Love Potion.” At the price I picked it up for, it was definitely worth it. Super hot story!

If you haven't read these and you're a fan of Nadia Nightside or erotica or mind control stories, then I think this would definitely be your deal. Overall it gets an A-plus from me!

I too enjoy countertenor voices tremendously

Although the author is a fluid writer, this book was certainly not what I hoped for. I too enjoy countertenor voices tremendously, and have gotten to know a few fine countertenors. When I saw this book listed, and its subject, I thought this would be right up my alley.
Wrong. It's much more the story of the author's obsession with the singer and their relationship as singer and fan, with the main focus being the author's experiences and feelings. I didn't learn much about James Bowman except in a very scattered way. Disappointing.

Burning in Blueness, The Dark-Light of a Countertenor is an account of a passion for the male high voice that began following a BBC radio broadcast in 1972 featuring countertenor James Bowman. The author became devoted to the art of James Bowman and through regular communication and meetings got to know him over ten years. This book is wonderful. The music is discussed in terms of technique, history and content with fascinating insights from professionals and experts. The life and personality of James Bowman is presented in the context of one who understands and has a sense of the man himself.

The real focus of this work is not a specific performer, but rather it is a study of passion for a specific art form. Maxine Handy takes the reader through a land of misty rivers and moonlit churchyards, evoked by the ethereal sound of the countertenor. Classical and spiritual references from both within James Bowman's repetoire and other sources make this a very thought provoking, completely satisfying read.
