O'Brien, formerly director of the Brazelton Touchpoints Center at Boston's Children's Hospital, and Tippins, a writer in the child development field, have reprinted their first two volumes (Watch Me Grow: I'm One; Watch Me Grow, I'm Two) and added a section for the 38- to 48-month-old preschooler to complete this set. Parents who derived help and comfort from the first two books will certainly enjoy this compilation. The authors combine the latest research in child development with an array of engaging and sometimes humorous child-rearing anecdotes (some from OBrien's own experiences with her twins) to make sense of the seemingly incomprehensible actions of a toddler or preschooler. For example, when a three-year-old deliberately misbehaves by eating cookies right before dinner, this child may actually be seeking reassurance that parental love is constant. O'Brien advises that when a child tests in this manner, parents should try to put their frustration with the behavior aside and provide their son or daughter with the limits they are seeking without anger. As in the first two volumes, O'Brien and Tippins discuss physical, cognitive and emotional development, stressing that children mature at different rates and their progress should be looked at individually. Using the latest pediatric brain research, she aims to help parents understand children at a particular stage in development and from a child's point of view, so that the typical issues of willfulness, control, and emotional meltdowns are minimized while opportunities for teaching and closeness are maximized. Written in clear, nontechnical language, each section ("I'm One," "I'm Two," "I'm Three") is organized into chapters addressing the physical, cognitive, verbal, emotional, and social development of that particular age, as well as each age group's special needs for routine and limits. This book stands up well against such classics as Penelope Leach's Your Baby and Child. Recommended especially for early childhood development collections.

Love this book!!!

Wow, I have the complete opposite take than the other reviewer. I absolutely love this book-it is so in depth and really explains children at every single developmental/emotional stage ages 1-3. Most books have a paragraph or maybe a few pages for every "problem" or developmental stage-this book has whole, very descriptive chapters. I recommend this book to all the new parents I know. There is a lot of reading but I love to read and soak in knowledge so this book is perfect to me.

Instantly useful and well laid-out, helps parenting be fun!

After just a few pages of reading, I actively used some advice given and it made a real difference in relating to my 16 month old. Each section describes several aspects of a particular age group: Brain and cognitive development, physical and emotional challenges, and my favorite, the toddler's perspective. The "Toddler's Perspective" sections give a typical scenario seen through the eyes of a toddler with their limited language and logic. This was, for me, the most helpful and unique part of the book and it really did help me have more patience with my son. It also helped me use play-time to better advantage, matching his level of understanding and his needs. The author imparts scientific information in a highly readable way and I had a lot of fun reading Watch Me Grow and putting her advice to use.

A very helpful and easy to read book

This is a great book for parents or caretakers of a toddler. The book is clearly laid out into sections by age (1, 2, and 3), and within each age, there are sections for the different types of development (such as motor, language, emotional). There is a checklist at the end of each section that helps you identify the key skills your child may be working on at different breakouts of time. From an organizational standpoint, this book is excellent.

I found the anecdotes and toddler-POV tales very helpful in understanding what is going on in my daughter's world right now. Most of them brought a smile to my face, and occasionally a happy tear as well.

Breathtaking Beauty

This is an extraordinary collection of art - comprehensive and diverse, spanning a significant portion of human history. Brief descriptions and explanatory text are sprinkled about but the greatest pleasure, in my opinion, derives from the gorgeous reproductions of art related to alchemy and mysticism.
I actually own two copies of this book. One that I peruse regularly and another that I shall keep as a spare should my first wear out. It is an excellent gift - very uplifting and immensely inspiring.
The subject of alchemy has been somewhat cheapened in our time - reduced to a few basic - often misrepresented - ideas and thrown about by simple minds with incoherent ideas. Few people have encountered the breadth of the subject and the contributions it has made to human civilizations. The inspiration it has provided artists and scientists is immense and this book captures quite a bit of this significance.
The author neither advocates existing belief in alchemy and mysticism, nor denies it. It is a historical perspective - largely relayed through imagery - celebrating the great beauty of the subject and the complexities it once contained.

Short version of the original book

Why do I give this book only 2 stars? I don't agree with the way this book is marketed. Watch out for ordering this book, as there are two books of the same title, author and publisher. What's the difference? One of the books has the word 'icons' on it and has only 192 pages from the original book. The original book has 712 pages. Check that the ISBN's match for what you are after. I made the mistake of buying this book from a site that did not list the page numbers and went off the title, publisher, author and picture on the front cover. Since first writing this review, I have now returned to say that I have the original 712 paged book and am very happy with it. When it comes to a book like this, why settle for second best?

A Museum should have better reproductions.

High praise that somebody said she owned two copies, one as a spare. I agree that this is a nice book to have as a reference, and I'm sure it must be the largest collection of "Hermetick" and "Alchymical" images presently available under one cover. That said, it's pretty small (although to produce this in a large volume would probably put its price out of the range of the average enthusiast), the colors are often badly reproduced, and the text is only excusable because nobody expects much in the way of text from Taschen. The main thing you have here is convenience. I have a large enough collection of books that I can track down superior examples of most of these images...but I have to track them down. With this book, I just flip through the pages. As a companion to this book I would suggest either (preferably, if you can find it) "Alchemy: the Medieval Alchemists and Their Royal Art" by Johannes Fabricius, or (failing that) "The Golden Game: Alchemical Engravings of the Seventeenth Century" by Stanislas Klossowski de Rola, for a better look at the engravings specifically. Also, "Art and Symbols of the Occult" by James Wasserman has the best color reproductions I've seen of the lavishly-painted sixteenth-century alchemical manuscript "Splendor Solis," amidst many other amusing curiosities.

Save your money

Obviously Ms. Shambaugh had a leg up on the competition due to her family's status. I did not trust this resource. I was a single working mother of three children and Shambaugh's lack of "struggles" in the first dozen pages or so turned me off to the book. I threw it away as it was not worthy of giving to a friend or even the thrift store.

Didn't resonate with me

Read the book, kindle edition. Superfast delivery. Had a few problems with the concepts though. The term "glass ceiling" is typically meant to refer to an unseen barrier that stops one from achieving a goal that they have. In typical context it is meant to refer to organizations where there seem to be a specific demographic pervasive at upper levels of leadership/management. The sticky floor concept is as the name describes implying there is less of a glass ceiling than one may have thought previously, but rather as a woman that I am somehow unknowingly sabotaging my own efforts to achieve that senior level position. None of the examples utilized in the book resonated with me. I want accuracy and drive towards exceeding goals - but I'm not mired with a perfectionistic tendency which inhibits my career growth. I have learned how to allocate business demands and personal time - and while it's not perfect, it's also not causing me any problems. To me, if this book were written by a man, women all over would be clamoring against the sexist attitudes - it doesn't make it less sexist to me to have the philosophy put forth by a female. I will say that I bought the book out of curiousity having attended a seminar hosted by the author (company sponsored seminar, meaning I wasn't out seminar-shopping and picked this one) and I was flabbergasted that it seemed that Ms. Shambaugh had so little confidence in women in the workplace. I gave the book two stars, because if you do have habits like the ones she identifies in the book (which are not gender-specific by the way - men can be perfectionists as well as women) then she may have strategies to help you overcome those areas. Otherwise, you may just wind up offended.

Eliza was able to transport me and the heroine back to Scotland in the 1700s. I'm obsessed with the series. Roderick was so romantic and impossibly suave. The sex was as hot as the build up. And the twist at the end??? I'm hooked. You will be too.

This book started out strong, but once Aileen traveled back in time, it started to wear me out trying to read through it. I understand the book is 1 of 3, it leaves on a precipitous cliffhanger, which is fine. I expect these things when reading series. But it feels like the author didn't put much effort into the last 30 pages or so of the book (and it's a 59 page book). Nothing was attention grabbing enough to interest me in purchasing the second book of the series.
